Benedict was elected in 2005, following the death of Pope John Paul II. He was more conservative than his predecessor. Critics said he tried to roll back changes that were well underway, from the expanding role of nuns to the appearance of the altar in the front of Catholic churches.

Benedict XVI is 86-years-old. He said he no longer has the mental and physical strength to carry on.

Catholic cardinals are expected to convene in Rome at the end of the month to elect a successor.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict's decision to live in the Vatican after he resigns will provide him with security and privacy. It will also offer legal protection from any attempt to prosecute him in connection with sexual abuse cases around the world, Church sources and legal experts say......... http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSBRE91E0ZI20130215?irpc=932

The pope has said that his resignation is "for the good of the church". Jon Paul was older and more sickly and he never resigned, what did Benedict say\do that is making him quit? Citing poor health is no excuse when you are telling people to pray for better health, its actually pretty hypocritical.

Today, I'm grateful the Christian community is neutered by constitutional law: I need not fear being punished by religious zealots for speaking truths: Abrahamic religions are myths. The pope's gawd is no more real than the gawds of Greek mythology. Get over it! Instead of being born again, why not just grow up?.

The pope could send people to hell if he so chose? lol I wish the people that rabidly defend their religion (any religion) were actually knowledgeable about it.

Why are you guys hating on my comment? Is it because you don't understand what I'm saying? Have you watched "Mea Maxima Culpa"? I'm not blindly catholic bashign or anything here. Benedict was in charge of ALL of the paperwork in the huge sex scandal. They make him pope to lock it all up, he resigns, and there may even be a loophole where he can name his successor. The catholic church is the largest business in the world, and this reads like a business "damage control" plan. The last pope to resign was over 600 years ago. This isn't something that just happens and popes don't resign due to age or deteriorating health. It's perfectly ok to be catholic AND value facts and reality. Some of you should try it.

And another thing, the pope can't send me to hell because the bible says that only god will judge me in the afterlife. That is if there was an afterlife..... Your logic is flawed, an atheist knows your own holy book better than you do.

How can the pope send us to hell if we aren't even catholic and if hell doesn't even exist? We are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Religion created by man and the concept of heaven and hell is a metaphor for our own morals.

The Vatican reports the Pope is resigning due to "advanced age". I agree, we do live in an "age" too advanced for Popes!

Can the pope be charged with a crime? Like what if the pope molested little boys decades ago, could he get busted for it even though he is all high and mighty?

Maybe, he needs to step down to make way for the rise of the Anti-Christ!

Maybe he was a figurehead to take the scandal heat, and now they appoint the real pope. :)

How come he doesn't just pray for the mental and physical strength to carry on? Is he afraid that his prayers won't be answered? And why does the pope need a bullet proof car? Does he not have faith that god will protect him from anyone who wants to harm him?
