The Sutherland girls basketball team played tough defense and used a patient offense Saturday to defeat highly rated Kimball, 41-34. Kimball (13-4 in Class C-1) took a 14-11 lead in the first quarter. But Sutherland's defense put the clamps on in the second quarter, holding Kimball to just three points and taking a one-point lead into the lockeroom at halftime. Sutherland (17-5 in D-1) gained a little ground in the third period and held a four-point lead at the quarter break. Kimball could not answer and the Sailors dominated the fourth quarter. Kimball played ball-control offense but the Sailors stayed with them on defense, and then some, holding Kimball without a field goal for nearly 14 minutes in the second and third quarters, Sutherland Coach Jason Gunderson said. "We held Kimball scoreless in the third until the last two minutes, when we broke down on transition defense," Gunderson said. Gunderson called it was a good win for the Sailors before sub-district play begins. Sutherland had a balanced offense. Sam Kennedy scored 14 points and she also grabbed 14 rebounds. Jalyne Schuster scored 11 and Sam Staggs 10. Darby Klinkhamer scored 11 for Kimball.
