Nebraska Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy, the leading candidate to become the state governor in 2014, abruptly resigned from office Saturday. Gov. Dave Heineman announced Sheehy’s resignation at a 10 a.m. press conference Saturday. Heineman did not specify a reason except to say it is “personal” but the Nebraska Watchdog news service and the Omaha World Herald report that Sheehy used his state phone to make personal phone calls to women, which might have been part of the problem. Sheehy’s last appearance in North Platte was in August, when he helped dedicate the new health education center at North Platte Community College. His wife Connie filed for divorce in July, after 29 years of marriage. They have two grown children. Sheehy is a former mayor of Hastings. He was considered to be a virtual shoo-in for governor, given his experience at the statehouse, Heineman’s endorsement and the lack of a strong democrat candidate.
