The North Platte Community College Knights men's basketball team defeated conference rival Lamar 88-67 at McDonald-Belton Gymnasium. The Knights took control of the game in the second half behind a solid team defensive effort. The Knights (15-4, 5-2 Region IX) had balanced scoring with five players in double figures behind 17 points from Ethan Montalvo and followed closely by Ben Wilson with 16. Aboubacar Casse knocked down 15 and Tim Simmons and Damon Brown had 14. Matt Sherriff led the Lamar Runnin’ Lopes (13-9, 7-3 Region IX) with 13 points. The Knights closed the first half with a good run to take a 45-34 into halftime. “We carried that over to the second half," Head Coach Kevin O’Connor said. "Our defensive intensity continues to improve this semester. The telling stat of the game for me was we won the turnover battle.” The Knights forced the Lopes into 21 turnovers and only made seven. Another telling stat was the Knights had 17 assists to the Lopes six. Damon Brown had five assists for North Platte. Aboubacar Casse gave the Knights a huge lift off the bench with 15 points and led the team with six rebounds. Casse said, “I have continued to work hard and was ready when my opportunity came.” The Knights are back in action Tuesday as they travel to McCook to face the McCook Community College Indians (5-13, 1-7 Region IX) at 7:30 p.m. The Knights then return home on Thursday Jan. 31 to face the Eastern Wyoming Lancers (11-8, 5-3 Region IX) at 5:30 p.m.
