The North Platte Community College Knights men's basketball team nipped the Hastings Broncos JV 72-70 Sunday afternoon. Damon Brown paced the Knights with 24 points on a day when the Knights shot the ball poorly from the perimeter.
The Knights' season leading scorer Ethan Montalvo struggled to get going most of the game but scored the last five points of the game on a pull-up 15 footer along the baseline and a corner 3-pointer that ended up being the game winning shot.
Montavalo finished with 10 points.
The Knights are 13-4 overall and 3-2 against Region IX competition.
The Broncos employed a zone defense much of the game, with Brown finding success penetrating and hitting floaters in the lane. Eric Richardson also found success around the basket after the Knights guards penetrated and dropped it off. Richardson scored 12 points for the contest.
The Broncos were led by Taylor Holst’s 19 points led the Bronco jayvees, all in the first half, and Brandon Krause had 18.
The Broncos had the ball with a chance to win but the Knights defense prevented a good look as time expired.
“In a game we didn’t shoot the ball particularly well, we found a way to win, North Platte assistant coach Nathan Wieseler said. "Now we will turn our attention to Laramie County who comes to our place Wednesday.”
The Knights return home to face the Laramie County Golden Eagles (14-6, 4-3 Region IX) at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Knights currently are in second place in the south subregion of Region IX and the Golden Eagles are in a tie for third.
