Heineman: More money for educationTell North Platte what you think

Gov. Dave Heineman has proposed a 5-percent increase in state aid to public schools for both fiscal year 2013-2014 and 2014-15 — an increase of $125 million.

Special education aid also would get a 5-percent annual increase under the governor’s proposal.

“This is a great state and it starts with our citizens,” Heineman said. “Our students of today are the leaders of tomorrow, and it is critical to our future that they have affordable access to a quality higher education.”

Heineman acknowledged the struggle of working-class families to afford higher education for their children. He has proposed giving $68.3 million to state colleges and universities to help the colleges freeze tuition for two years.

Community colleges would receive $10.7 million to offset similar tuition freezes.

And now the regeants are looking at increasing the room and board fees by 4-5%, possibly making it more expensive than tuition. The more it changes, the more it stays the same.

Bad idea. Community colleges already receive too much. One more place money can be saved.
