Mail: Gun ControlTell North Platte what you think

Before you jump on the emotionally charged bandwagon for gun control take a moment to reflect on the real purpose of the Second Amendment the right of the people to take up arms in defense of themselves, their families, and property in the face of invading armies or an oppressive government.

The argument that the Second Amendment only applies to hunting and target shooting is asinine. When the United States Constitution was drafted hunting was an everyday chore carried out by men and women to put meat on the table each night, and target shooting was an unheard of concept.

Musket balls were a precious commodity in the wilds of early America and were certainly not wasted on target shooting. The Second Amendment was written by people who fled oppressive and tyrannical regimes in Europe and refers to the right of the American citizens to be armed for defense purposes should such tyranny rise in the United States.

As a proud member of the Sons of the American Revolution Society I hope my third-great-grandfather didn't fight in the American Revolution in vain.

Mr. Cline, thank for sharing your thoughts. I agree with you. As for Truthout.org... basically a pro-democrat website. It is against guns... any one surprised?

Mr. Cline, with all do respect, your alleged facts concerning the impetus behind the creation of the 2nd amendment to the U.S. constitution is a misrepresentation of recorded history. The second amendment was ratified to preserve the slave patrol militias of the southern states. Patrick Henry, George Mason, and James Madison were clear on that . . . and we all should be too. Text of the 2nd Amendment: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Thom Hartmann penned a short essay a while back concerning the ratification of the 2nd amendment. It was published by "Truthout". Embedded in the article are hyperlinks offering additional info concerning this matter. Hopefully, you and others of your ilk will take the time to read it, and quite muddying the present day gun/ammo regulation debate with your inflated and inaccurate claims. Here's the link to Thom Hartmann's article: http://truth-out.org/news/item/13890-the-second-amendment-was-ratified-to-preserve-slavery
