January is National Mentoring Month. Here in North Platte, the Teammates mentoring program is going full speed ahead with growth and we are thrilled!
Our community’s success depends on helping every child succeed in school and reach their full potential in life, and all young people need a solid foundation of support, in addition to their family, that will help them become well-educated, confident, and productive citizens.
Mentoring is a proven, effective strategy that helps youth by matching them with a caring, responsible adult who can provide guidance and direction, and build their confidence.
Mentors build character, encourage success, boost confidence, lift expectations, and inspire youth to do their best, serving as friends, role models, teachers, and sources of stability and support during a critical time in their life.
Research shows that mentoring has beneficial and long-term effects on youth by increasing their academic engagement and decreasing the likelihood of substance abuse and other risky behaviors.
Mentoring also strengthens our city’s economic and social well-being by helping youth fulfill their potential while helping maintain healthy families and promoting more vibrant communities.
Every day residents of North Platte are making a profound difference in the lives of our youth by serving as mentors, and programs like Teammates are supported by many sponsors and donors that offer financial support.
We couldn’t do it without each youth who commits to being mentored, each mentor, or without the financial support from our community.
