Mail: Recyclables go in right placesTell North Platte what you think

A rumor has started around North Platte that the recyclables from the curbside recycling program are being taken to the transfer station and ultimately end up in the landfill. This rumor is not true.

The contents of the curbside carts are taken to Regional Recycling, where they are sorted.

Out of these sorted materials, about 10% are “trash” -- non-recyclable materials. During the last three months, residents threw 11.25 tons of trash material into recycling bins.

This material is baled, placed in a roll-off container that, when full, is taken to the transfer station. Ninety-Nine tons of recyclables were collected in the curbside recycling bins during those three months.

In North Platte, recycled material consists of #1 and #2 plastics, aluminum, tin, steel, cardboard, paperboard and mixed paper. Recyclables are sorted and then sold to markets where the materials are reused.

We hope that this misinformation has been cleared up.

Curbside recycling participants help our local environment by their efforts. We appreciate the work of the city of North Platte and Regional Recycling in making this program a success.
