New golf carts coming to Iron EagleTell North Platte what you think

The city will spend more than $25,000 this summer for 36 new golf carts at Iron Eagle, following action Tuesday by the North Platte city council.

The council unanimously approved an agreement that former Mayor Marc Kaschke inked before he left office in November with Miller and Sons, a company from Lincoln that supplies golf carts.

Miller and Sons is the largest golf cart supplier in the nation, a golf course spokesman said at the council meeting.

Under the terms, the city will lease the 36 TXT 48 golf carts (called “golf cars”) for $116 each per month. The lease starts in May and the term is for 55 months, which would be at the end of the city’s contract with Landscapes Golf Group, the Lincoln company that was hired last year to manage the course.

The existing fleet of 36 carts at the course – 2007 Yamahas – will be bought by Miller and Sons for the amount the city owes on the carts – about $950 each. But the city won’t net much on that deal, because in turn, the city will pay Miller and Sons $900 per cart when the new lease agreement expires in five years.

Miller and Sons will toss in two gas-powered carts at no additional cost, under the agreement.

Councilman Larry Campbell asked if there was a local company to work with, but the course spokesman said Miller and Sons is the best, and besides there are no local companies, except those that handle repairs and service.

It was a short but productive meeting for the council, with all members present.

No parking

The council also agreed to ban parking on both sides and the center of the cul-de-sac beneath the overpass on Poplar St., from Front St. south approximately 140 feet.

Councilman Martin Steinbeck asked for an explanation. The city’s contracted engineer Tom Werblow said vehicles that park there partially block access to a city storage building, making it difficult to get trucks and trailers in and out safely.

In other action, the council:

• Approved the mayor’s appointed department heads: City Administrator Jim Hawks, Finance Director Dawn Miller, City Clerk Angela Gilbert, Director of Development Jim Hawks, Fire Chief Paul Pedersen, City Attorney Doug Stack, Library Director Cecilia Lawrence, Police Chief Mike Swain, Public Service Director Wes Meyer, Utility Business Manager Jim Hawks and City Physician Dr. Leland Lamberty.

• Passed an ordinance on third reading establishing higher fees for renewal of operating licenses for multiple dwellings or rooming houses. The fee is $65. The city code still stated the fee was $17.50, so the code was changed to fit the current fee.

• Amended the municipal code on third reading relating to free-standing signs in an F-1 district and permitted signs in an H-1 district and also amended on third reading the code relating to setback and height regulations in a hospital district, paving the way for signs for the expansions at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

• Approved requests from Adams Bank and Trust, Bank of the West, Equitable Bank, Farmers State Bank of Wallace and North Platte, First National Bank, Great Western Bank, NebraskaLand National Bank, Nebraska Public Agency Investment Trust, Sandhills State Bank and Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. to be depository banks for city funds for 2013.

• Accepted the Mayor’s appointment of Dan McGuire and Gayla Ward to the Library Advisory Board.

• Accepted improvements and certificate of completion for street improvements downtown on East 5th from Bailey to the west right-of-way of Dewey St.

• Accepted improvements and certificate of completion of street improvements on 18th St. from Hayes to Miles.

I miss type in my previous comment. At the end of the lease, the city has the option to purchase ALL of the carts for $1.00 not $100 (plus any sales tax and other taxes). Sorry for the miss type.

I know my view and opinion of this matter is not a popular one. But, Iron Eagle is here to stay, so why not try to make the best out of the situation?

NPRR, I bet if we checked the books, golf cart rental is probably one of the areas that operate in the black for Iron Eagle. For me, if I go play a course where the carts are aging, it sheds a negative light on the courses operations. If I am going to pay the money to rent a cart, I want it to be a nice cart. The newer carts are part of projecting a positive image. It is a form of marketing. The newer carts can be used as a selling point. There is a local course that I don't play due in part to the old, run down carts that they offer for rent.

4thelaw--Was not questioning the Santa Cop donation spending, was actually questioning the way it was written into the claims to be paid. northplatterailroad--had you came to the meeting, or asked one of your council members, you would know that at the end of the lease the city has the option to purchase all golf carts for $100 a piece. As far as this company being chosen, this was done before the new council came in.

Slickster...I see that your math works out, so good point IF...Iron Eagle was already in the black. However, the whole point of having this consulting company come in and operate it was to get it to start having a positive bottom line. How does this help that goal?

Also, if you want to figure in those that have purchased a yearly cart pass at $500, they need to play 39 rounds a year to break even on that deal. Some play more than that some play less.

Really NPRR!? This is a common practice with a large number of golf courses. There are very few courses that actually own the carts used on that particular course. Since you love math so much, here's some for ya. $116x36=$4176 per month. NOW when you divide that by the amount to rent that cart for 18 holes ($13) there only need to be 322 rentals per month to operate in the black. That's just 11 times a day. I'm fairly sure there are more than 11 people playing golf there a day.

Kaschke is in bed with his buddies in Lincoln. That's why he forced the city to sign early with Landscapes--because if it had gone through at the normal time, opposition would have won, and Landscapes never would have been brought in. He knew it. He's not dumb in his ambition, and he did many things to profit himself/ his family secretly. Now it comes to light that he pushed this through as well, secretly, with Landscapes and another company in Lincoln. I wonder if his family owns stock or has ties to Landscapes or the Miller business? And is it just me, or is it clear that they just leased 36 NEW golf carts because the 6 year old golf carts are....what, bad? They LEASED these. That means in 5 years, they go back to Miller and Sons. 36 carts x 116 each a month = $4,176 a MONTH x 12 = 50,112 a year....for FIVE YEARS...= $250,560. You read that right. Two Hundred Fifty Thousand, Five Hundred Sixty DOLLARS...to Lincoln, in secret, because Kacshke has interest somewhere secret...in Lincoln. What could $250000 done for North Platte?!?!?

Are you serious? Was this not the same golf course that has been running in debt ever since opening? Did they not just hire an outside company to take it over and try to correct this problem? They honestly think that buying new golfcarts will satisfy that problem? This is just a display of waste at the taxpayers cost!

I may have just missed it before, but I don't recall hearing about the golf cart purchase in past stories and discussion. I'd think there would have been a huge negative response if it had been out there. Did the current Council really agree this is a good deal, or did they just pass it because the former mayor signed it just before going out if office? Was there any discussion on it?

Why is Mr. Hawks being so overburdened or is it he wants THREE paychecks, the man is city administrator, director of development and utility buisness manager. I think that is alot for one man to do and do well, just keeping up with power sewer and garbage should be a full time job.

seriously?!? new golf carts? when so many people have had to cut back their own spending due to increased taxes and all other kinds of economy hits, we the city cant live with 5 year old carts? there's how many people that drive around with older vehicles than that or the city employees that don't get their raises because of cut backs. didn't I just read yesterday on the cut backs and budget cuts? and I also remember seeing an article with council questioning the santa cop donation spending account? wow! is all I can say.
