Sutherland put on an offensive display on Tuesday in a 74-28 win over Maxwell in the first round of the South Platte Valley Association girls' basketball tournament at North Platte Community College.
"We were just on fire," said Sailor coach Jason Gunderson, who coached at Maxwell before heading west to Sutherland. "We hit outside shots and it really deflated Maxwell."
Joli Hopping and Jalyne Schuster scored the first two baskets of the game for the Lady Sailors (11-3). Then Kaley Stokey continued the run by draining a mid-range jump shot. Sam Kennedy then made a three-point play before Stokey ended the run with a layup that made it 11-0 a little under two minutes into the game.
A basket by Anna Crane put Maxwell (3-10) on the board and then Josie Cox made a free throw for the Wildcats to put them closer.
Maxwell performed valiantly in the first quarter but still found itself down 22-10 going into the second.
That was when Sutherland blew it open. The Sailors began the quarter with a 13-0 run. Everything they shot in the second seemingly went in and by the time it was over, they had a 48-16 lead at halftime to show for it.
"We did a good job of just running our plays," Gunderson said. "We executed well. We worked on playing against the zone and we did a good job with it tonight."
Lady Wildcat coach Mitch Armour said that his team was overmatched against Sutherland.
"We had a poor shooting night," said Armour. "We just couldn't get much offense going. Those girls from Sutherland just shot lights out. They made a lot of shots."
