SPVA Boys-First Round: Perkins County 54, Sutherland 42Tell North Platte what you think

Sutherland got off to a fast start on Monday but faltered down the stretch, losing 54-42 to Perkins County in the first round of the South Platte Valley Association boys' basketball tournament.

"I thought the kids handled their pressure defense well, early on," said Sutherland coach Dan Dyer. "But with the style of defense they play, it began to wear on the younger kids."

The Sailors (0-13) came out and shocked the Plainsmen by scoring the first 10 points of the game. Freshman Brett Good opened the scoring with a three-pointer, then Tyler Fear made a layup. Good then followed with another three and then Fear followed by making a pull-up jumper from 10-feet.

"Early on, our kids executed our full-court and half-court sets pretty well," Dyer said.

Sutherland led 19-12 at the end of the first quarter but the Sailors started to lose the momentum in the second.

With 2:38 left in the first half, Perkins County (7-7) came within 25-23 when Jake Sexson made a layup.

On the final play of the half, Elliot Carlson was fouled by Fear going up for a layup after stealing the ball as time expired. Carlson then made one of two free throws to make it a 28-28 tie at the break.

Quinton Hite and Alex Johnston scored the first two buckets for the Plainsmen in the second half. Perkins County never gave up the lead.

The Plainsmen stretched the lead to 41-32 after a three by Hite with 28 seconds left and the Sailors couldn't regain the spark they had at the beginning of the game to come back.

Perkins County will play No. 1-seed North Platte St. Pat's in the SPVA semifinals Thursday at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium. Sutherland will play Maxwell, who lost to Hershey on Monday, for fifth place on Saturday.
