The men were on an agri-business trip to Lincoln County. They were headed for York.

Killed in the crash were Chris Nelsen, 53, of York, Mark Bottorff, 54, of Lancaster, Kan., Ken Babcock, 71, of Hiawatha, Kan. and Jason Drane, 39, of St. Joseph, Mo.

The men developed grain bins, silos and irrigation systems, according to news reports.

Bottorff was the pilot of the twin-engine plane, Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins said.

The plane was reported missing shortly after it took off from the North Platte Regional Airport around 3:46 p.m., Collins said. It was misty, temperatures were slightly below freezing and a north wind was blowing 18-20 miles an hour, according to the National Weather Service.

The plane was found in the hills about 13 miles northeast of Maxwell. The plane went down violently in a small valley, Sheriff Jerome Kramer said.

YORK, Neb. — “I received a text about 3:30 p.m. that day from Chris,” remembers his wife, Denise Nelsen. “He said they were getting ready to take off, they were about ready to fly out of North Platte. He said it was icy. That was it. I never heard from him again.”

The ice storm was a surprise and came upon NP so quickly. So sad for all.

So sad and unnecessary. It doesn't matter how good of a pilot you are, when your plane ices up, you are toast. It wouldn't have been to hard to figure out that conditions were not good for flying that day. Most likely they were in a hurry and on a schedule they thought they "had" to keep. Being a little inconvenienced would have saved their lives. The next morning was clear as a bell. One bad decision was their last. My thoughts go out to the families.
