Four die in plane crash near MaxwellTell North Platte what you think

Four businessmen were killed Friday afternoon when their airplane crashed in a field near Maxwell shortly after taking off from North Platte in a developing storm.

The men were on an agri-business trip to Lincoln County. They were headed for York.

Killed in the crash were Chris Nelsen, 53, of York, Mark Bottorff, 54, of Lancaster, Kan., Ken Babcock, 71, of Hiawatha, Kan. and Jason Drane, 39, of St. Joseph, Mo.

The men developed grain bins, silos and irrigation systems, according to news reports.

Bottorff was the pilot of the twin-engine plane, Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins said.

The plane was reported missing shortly after it took off from the North Platte Regional Airport around 3:46 p.m., Collins said. It was misty, temperatures were slightly below freezing and a north wind was blowing 18-20 miles an hour, according to the National Weather Service.

The plane was found in the hills about 13 miles northeast of Maxwell. The plane went down violently in a small valley, Sheriff Jerome Kramer said.
