The Sailors (8-2) beat Gothenburg 49-35 Friday, pulling away in the second half. The score was 23-20 at halftime.

“We pressed a little too hard in the first half,” Sutherland coach Jason Gunderson said. “In the second half, we got a some good ball movement, had lot of looks at the basket and hit our shots.”

Sutherland’s defense held Gothenburg (3-8) to just 15 points in the second half.

Sam Kennedy scored 22 points for the Sailors. Joli Hopping contributed 14. Jacey Wiggins was the only Gothenburg player to score in double figures, with 10 points.

Gothenburg: 5-15-6-9 – 35

On Saturday, Sutherland blew out Perkins County, 56-24. The outcome was decided early. Sutherland ran up 21 points in the first quarter, while Perkins County (5-5) managed only 7.

Sutherland’s offense was relatively quiet in the second and third quarters but posted 18 points in the final period to put the game away.

"Perkins County played man-to-man in the first quarter and had a hard time matching up with us,” Gunderson said. “We had a poor shooting night overall, especially in the middle of the game.”

Sutherland's Connie McConnell came off the bench to hit a three-pointer at the end of the third quarter and then hit another to open the fourth quarter and spark the offense to life, Gunderson said.

Sutherland's offense was balanced. Sam Kennedy scored 11 points and Sam Staggs had 10. Kaylee Stokey scored 8 and McConnell, 8.

Jessi Hoffert had 7 points for Perkins County.
