The director of the Pawnee Assisted Living Hotel asked for help Saturday, admitting that the operation might not be salvageable. Sandy Schade held a discussion with about 30 people – civic leaders, counselors, mental health care advocates and residents – for nearly two hours in the hotel lobby. The question is if the building should be fixed up or closed down. “I really don’t know the future right now,” Schade said. “We can’t sustain this building without help. It is an albatross around my neck and we can’t do it alone.” City Administrator Jim Hawks said he would go over the finances on Monday with Schade to see what might be feasible. The second of two 83-year-old boilers – the main heat source - quit on Dec. 19. It is not worth fixing, Schade said. Temporary space heaters were set up, and residents wear coats as they come and go through the lobby. The hotel is home to people with emotional and behavorial disabilities. The Bulletin talked with Schade in the lobby for two hours on New Year’s Day, researching the situation as residents came and went or watched football in the lobby. (For that report, see this week’s print edition, on sale on our news racks throughout Lincoln County and surrounding towns.) The hotel has made-do with temporary heaters, is installing baseboard heaters in rooms and adding temporary forced air furnaces in the lobby. Jenny Olson, the administrator of North Platte’s Liberty House on Fourth and Willow, a home for the same type of residents, said the community of North Platte needs the Pawnee. Olson said Liberty House has room for maybe 4-5 more residents, but it is basically full. Some poeple at the meeting suggested moving the operation from the Pawnee to the former Boys and Girls Home at 2300 East Second, which is for sale. The price of the building is $350,000, said John Striebel, a mental health care counselor who is checking out options. The Boys and Girls Home would hold about 30 residents. North Platte Nurse Shirleen Smith, a guardian, is moving two of her charges into an apartment where they will live together. They will have to learn to cook, but she said she thinks they are ready for it. Residents as well as guardians said the Pawnee is uniquely successful for some, featuring a private room and a private bath. “I have a resident who had no success anywhere else in the state but here,” said Dorothy Rice, a mental health guardian. “This is one of the better places.” “Having our own rooms with a bathroom is very important to us,” said a woman named Mary, a former Pawnee resident who is now living on her own. “That much privacy is a big deal to a person (mental health patient) who has no emotional privacy.”
"We haven’t asked the city or the community for much help,” said Kathy Jo Smith, the chairwoman of the board of directors and a volunteer at the hotel for 20 years. “We have a very homey place for our residents. We treat them with love.” Schade agreed to another meeting in a few days, after she and Hawks review the financial situation. The hotel has a capacity of about 75, but the number of residents began to decline during the summer, when state inspectors found problems and put the hotel on probation for a year. Recently, inspectors returned and found insects and stains during an unannounced visit, officially revoking the hotel’s operating license, pending an appeal. A hearing is set for Jan. 30. Schade said the insects are “water bugs” that frequently live in old pipes in the oldest parts of North Platte. The bugs are rarely seen and are harmless, she said. The random state inspection also found some medicine administrative records were incomplete. Schade said a med-tech failed to initial some of the records and is no longer working there.

Does anybody have any income numbers to crunch against local private care cost? That would reveal a lot. |

I've posted earlier but it must have hit a nerve! Anyway, The people the "truth" says work for free only do that because they know they are not actually doing the work required of them. Having had a relative in there for several years we had to move her miles away after finding out she was offered PCP and other drugs by not only a resident, but also an employee! Need any more reason for them to shut this sore eyesight down? |

Nice of you to volunteer others for doing the hard work never forget. Tell you what why don't we just arrest a whole bunch of people, drag them to the Pawnee and tell them they have to fix it before we release them. I volunteer you first. |

Gee Ne bred, you know an awful lot about cockroaches. Did you used to work in Washington?
The Pawnee should be shut down. One of the few glorious old reminders of a time past and it is allowed to go fall into ruins. |

Those insects are not just water bugs but in fact a Cockroach(Oriental Cockroach)
Oriental cockroaches are often called water bugs because of their preference for dark, damp, and cool areas such as those under sinks and washing machines, and in damp basements. This species, which is less wary and more sluggish than the others, of concern because it often travels through sewer pipes and lives on filth.Oriental cockroaches are often called water bugs because of their preference for dark, damp, and cool areas such as those under sinks and washing machines, and in damp basements. This species, which is less wary and more sluggish than the others, of concern because it often travels through sewer pipes and lives on filth.Oriental cockroaches feed on all kinds of filth, rubbish, and other decaying organic matter. They seem especially fond of garbage and the contents of discarded tin cans. If water is available, they can live for a month without food; without water they die within two weeks. The most important aspect of cockroach damage derives from their habit of feeding and harboring in damp and unsanitary places such as sewers, garbage disposals, kitchens, bathrooms, and indoor storage areas. Filth from these sources is spread by cockroaches to food supplies, food preparation surfaces, dishes, utensils, and other surfaces. Cockroaches contaminate far more food than they are able to eat.Cockroaches in general produce odorous secretions from various points in their bodies. Such secretions can affect the flavors of various foods. When cockroach populations are high, these secretions may result in a characteristic odor in the general region of the infestation. Disease-producing organisms such as bacteria, protozoa, and viruses have been found in their bodies.Different forms of gastroenteritis (food poisoning, dysentery, diarrhea, etc.) appear to be the principal diseases transmitted by Oriental cockroaches. The insects carry these disease-causing organisms on their legs and bodies and deposit the organisms on food and utensils as they forage. Cockroach excrement and cast skins also contain a number of allergens, to which many people exhibit allergic responses such as skin rashes, watery eyes, congestion of nasal passages, asthma, and sneezing.for this reason this place needs to be shut down immediately .This has been a long time problem with several exterminating companies trying to correct the problem buy leaving after no pay or the management not taking the necessary steps to correct the Sanitation and Hygiene issues there. |

The community has helped this place, Walmart Distribution basically provides for 90% of the food that is served there (All Donated), Alco donates toliet paper, the staff works for free out of the kindness of their hearts because they care for the residents as their own home lifes are suffering because they cant pay bills, what else can the community do?? There is something seriously wrong with the money situation. Someone PLEASE investigate |

Another historical fact. Everyone is probably familiar with 'Promotory Point' in the Utah territory as being the final connecting point (golden spike) for the transcontinental railroad. But did you know the final paved segment of the Lincoln Highway (Hwy 30) happened right outside of North Platte? Here's a link, scroll down to page 18 and the celebration that was held at the Pawenee Hotel.

I have no idea why this woman in still in charge, what does she have over them? I run a business that she still owes money to, med tech excuse wow, why don't you tell the whole truth Sandy, med-aides that were not even med aides giving medications, no RN to oversee only on a on call basis reviewing records days later. Yes Pawnee in need of help, I wouldnt give a dime until this woman is fired, investigated and charged to the fullest extent of the law. Sandy is in charge, always has a excuse, no other facility would put up with this, she would have been gone along time ago. Shame on the people who keep her employed, your just as guilty. |

By the way, the building across the street was in dire straits back in the '80's. The boiler had failed and the building seemed doomed to become a parking lot. It is now called the Neville Center for the Performing Arts.

It scares me that she describes the hotel and it's residents as, "an albatross around my neck." Leave, Ms. Schade. Leave. Don't be bothered anymore.
This is a tragedy occurring everyday--some/most of these people can't speak up and say that what's happening is wrong. And yet some say it's acceptable they can't even walk through the lobby without a coat on--that we shouldn't be worried? What about those space heaters--some of these people are vulnerable enough they could be burned VERY easily. I do not think the words COLD and DANGEROUS describe any place as "homey." God help those still there--and someone please take care of those who need it in North Platte. Shame--shame on you, Schade, for acting as if this is a burden on YOU. |

Nothing against the Pawnee, however, I know for a fact that Municipal Light and Power has forgiven tens of thousands of dollars in bills for this business in the past at Jim Hawks instruction. I strongly believe this place should be shut down and investigated for financial fraud. Although they no longer have the full capacity of residents, this business has been a cash cow for some, while giving the residents the bare minimum care. |
