National debt, 10 a.m. Jan. 3

In a last minute budget deal, Congress kept most tax cuts in place but raised taxes on the wealthy to confront the soaring national debt. Conservatives are threatening to overthrow the leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives as the tax hike on the wealthy becomes law. Federal leaders said they would wrangle over much tougher decisions to cut spending in coming weeks. The small step to increase federal taxes was approved Tuesday by the House, 257-167, although most Tea Party conservatives and even a few Democrats voted no. Rep. Adrian Smith was among them. Earlier, the deal passed the Senate by an overwhelming 89-8 vote. It increases taxes on Americans who make more than $450,000 per year. It also has $71 billion in tax breaks to select businesses, including electric scooters, NASCAR racetracks and tax free bonds for a new headquarters for Goldman-Sachs in New York City. In the House, the biggest complaint is that the bill won’t do enough to cut spending. Some House members say they want to elect a new speaker to replace Rep. John Boehner. Rep. Eric Cantor, who led opposition, is mentioned as Boehner’s successor. Boehner also took heavy criticism for not calling a vote on $60 billion in new spending for winter storm Sandy victims on the northeast coast. When the time finally came to a vote on the new tax program, 85 Republicans and 172 Democrats agreed to send the bill to the president to be signed, while 151 Republicans and 16 Democrats voted no. Congress unofficially agreed to delve into spending cuts in the next session, in a couple weeks. Smith said there is lots of work to do. “My concerns about spending remain and I will continue to fight to reduce the deficit and pass commonsense tax reform,” Smith said. “We must find an alternative to arbitrary defense cuts, but simply delaying these difficult decisions without replacing the spending reductions is the wrong approach.” In the Senate, Sen. Mike Johanns voted yes and had this to say: “This agreement isn’t my ideal option, but I firmly believe going over the cliff isn’t an option at all.“I would have preferred stopping a tax hike for every American, significantly reducing spending and strengthening Social Security and Medicare. This package, however, is a vast improvement from the Administration’s original proposal and no one can overlook the fact it protects an estimated 99 percent of Americans from being hit with the largest tax hike in our nation’s history.”
If you are wondering what is in the bill, here is a summary of the deal: • Permanently extends current tax rates for families earning less than $450,000 a year; • Makes permanent current capital gains and dividends rates for families earning less than $450,000 while changing the rate to 20 percent for families making more than $450,000; • Extends popular tax credits – like the tuition and child care tax credits – for five years; • Extends the current $5 million estate tax exemption but the tax rate on estates over that limit would change from 35 percent to 40 percent; • Prevents a 27 percent reduction in Medicare payments to doctors and other health care providers treating patients on Medicare, something Congress typically does every year; • Replaces two months of the approximately $100 billion across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration scheduled to start in January; • Extends the current farm bill, which passed in 2008, for a few months until the end of this fiscal year; • Permanently patches the Alternative Minimum Tax. This tax was originally designed to prevent high-income earners from using exemptions to avoid paying income taxes but did not automatically adjust for inflation. Without patching the AMT, this tax would impact nearly 135,000 Nebraska households earning as little as $33,750 a year according to the Congressional Research Office.

@srw you need to help me out here. Where did I mention anything about 80 hours per week, characterize anyone, judge anyone's conduct or otherwise make any untrue statements? You must either feel guilty or your impaired again. |

@dragracer: Your parents choose where you got your education from, and you are right, an education does not equate intelligence, however without education (formal or otherwise) all you will have is ignorance.
And no, considering the amount of time, effort, countless hours (days, weeks), that so many people gave to try to educated you, it is not repayable. The debt goes beyond simple, and mindlessness, thinking of "paying taxes", it is more than a monetary debt. |

@sako: When you characterize people as either "...taker or a maker", I have to question your virtues. It is divisive in the extreme, and very few people work 80+ hours a week, and I doubt you do as well. However, even if you do it does not give you the right, or moral ground, to judge the conduct of those who do not. When your life is perfect, and you do everything right, without the assistance of anyone else, for any reason, then maybe you can judge the rest of us. Until then, if you need to be judgmental of someone not living up to your ideology, go look in a mirror. |

SWR, What kid has the ability to chose a government education or private education? Education makes you educated not smart. Smart is far more valuable in making money. In my opinion. Who paid for my free education? Some one else? Well sorry if you pay taxes especially property tax (If you rent you pay it)you pay it back. Many of us have paid it back with heavy premiums. Vouchers would solve a lot of of our education problems including cost. Don't even start with college student loans. Banksters and education. LOL! |

Sadly to many people think bleeding money from others is helping the poors. Enabling is what generally what takes place. The poors seem demanding and show little or no respect in return. If you look at the poors on a global scale as they should be, then they fair very well. I am for fed income tax on ALL income (including welfare) from $5K up and a minimum pay rate of 5% after deductions. We are all Americans so why not make it everyone's Fair Share? Trying to undo what damage government education has done may be imposable. LOL! |

@ SRW, You are wrong once again. Gross income is NOT what taxes are based on. It is the net which is taxable. That is derived after all deductions are taken and then the tax credits are claimed. Remember, each dependent is a deduction as well which is why many times the result is $0 taxes paid. I don't see any "poor bashing" going on, more just a statement of facts. Why the assumption about me and what I determine to be virtuous? I know there are at least a few that would attest differently. |

@sako: I find it amusing every time someone says the poor don't pay income tax, while they do. Any annual gross income over $7000 is subject to federal income tax. Granted, it is not as high as it is for someone making 20k, 50k, or 400k, annually but there are taxes to be paid.
Keep in mind, some working 40 hour/week at minimum wage makes 15k annual, after taxes (federal and state, FICA and other deductions) their net take home is about 12k annually. So $500 is more valuable to someone making minimum wage, while it is pocket change for someone like Mitt.
The child tax credit is for working parent(s) to offset the cost of daycare, which can be very expensive, and impossible to pay for single working parents. Would you rather they not work at all?
Sako, you and a few others on here do a great deal of poor bashing, you act like you have never received anything you didn't work for, but that is a fairytale. Regardless of how it was done, the first 12 years of your education (if you graduated) was paid for by SOMEONE else, and it is a debt you can never repay, and without that education you would be nothing and have nothing.
But one question for you. When did greed, gluttony, and vanity, become virtues in your life? |

The tax code is what allows for the Romney's horse to be legally used as a tax deductible expense. If you condemn the Romneys for taking that deduction then all the tax payers who deduct the interest on their home motgage should be put into that same category. The tax code works very well for the "poor", not only do they pay NO income tax, they also receive credits without even having paid anything. If you have a minimal amount of earned income and a child you get a check. It is often referred to as a refund, but, how do you refund something that has never been paid in? What is a "fair share"? Is it the $400,000. paid annually by those who had net earned income of a million or the $4,000. windfall sent to those who may have only earned at the amount that required 0 dollars tax? Who gets to define "fair share"? |

My professional racing career was exactly the same as Mitt. Call it hobby would not be wrong. The operation consumed more the average workers wage annually and never saw a dime of profit. Look around at farms where the owners have to work jobs to survive. I call them hobby farms as they file tax loses for a business that is a failure and continue. The tax advantages and life style are their goal. I like the new truck my friend just got his wife for free with tax advantages on his farm return. It's a hobby farm. If you pay to much in taxes then you need to learn how the system works. It's not just for the rich any body can play. |

@dragracer; I disagree, your racing car, if it is your profession, is your means of work. It is no different then a salesperson deducting mileage and fuel cost on their car when used for business. However, Mitt's horse is not a business, it is hobby, or sport. The two are not the same, as you make your living via your race car, and his horse is a play toy. |

folks, you need to look at the big picture. You are paying way more intax's than you think. Example. TODAY, I re-licensed my 1 year old truck : $702.00 vehicle tax, $30.00 motor vehicle "fee", anbd 165.50 "registration fee" for a grand total of 897.50. The "fees" added approx 28% MORE to my registration. This is a TAX. So all this BS about tax rates being where they are is exactly that...BS. We are being taxed to death, and our government continues to spend OUR money recklessly. I will ask you all this one question: Are you a taker or a maker? If you are a taker...your days are limited because those of us that continually work 80+ hours a week to feed all the people that don't want to. And don't give me any crap about there not being enough jobs. Thats a crock of BS. Every company I am associated with is hiring. Unfortunatley, they cannot find anyone who will either work for their pay, or can pass a drug test. Isn't it odd that for most JOBS you have to pass a drug test, yet but those collecting free money can continue to use drugs (not all, but some), go to the bars, always have smokes, can afford tattoos and body piercings, but can't afford to feed their kids. Sorry for the rant, however, the gravey train will come to an end if we can ever get rid of this current president. |

I didn't mean to give the idea I endorse the flat tax concept. I don't. What we have is fine. Abuse is the problem as with most of our governments actions over the last few decades. Mitts show horse or my professional racing career deductions are the same. Rich envy is a sign of weakness. Wonder what Bill Clinton does with his $98MM made since he left office. Wonder how much Hillary is going to make after her world wide deals? Books deals, speaking, consulting. Sheeple LOL! |

Only Congress, and more preciously the House of Representative, can change our tax code. (This questions the legitimacy of this bill since it originated in the Senate).
The whole problem with getting Congress to revise the tax code is how well it already works for the powerful and wealthy elite in this country. The more money you have, or make, the more deductions and write-offs you can have, as presented by negirl2 (Mitt's horse), but also by the fact that on average Mitt pays less in taxes then someone earning 150k a year. Mitt's manipulation of our tax system is not abnormal either, it is quite common.
The very wealthy benefit from how it is now, and they control the purse strings of our elected officials. As long as politicians can accept any amount of private campaign monies, instead of forcing all elections to be limited on spending and using only public funding, politicians will work for those who "donate" the most.
For people who want a flat tax, and think it would work better, here is a glaring example of why it does not. Russia has a flat income tax of 13%, and has far more economic and social problems then we do. A flat tax does not work if it is too low, and is highly burdensome on the middle-class (if there is one) and keeps the poor...even more poor, if it is too high. A progressive tax system is not perfect, but it is better then the alternative.
The problem is not that we are taxed too much, it is the management of the taxes we already pay, and the ridiculous spending by our politicians. But not necessarily in manner that so many people think. Why is it that federal, state, and local governments will pay an exceedingly high price for products and services from private companies? For an example why does the government pay $80 for a hammer, when the same hammer cost $10 at Walmart? Who is to blame for this type of stupidity? The government, or the companies that are ripping off the taxpayers by over charging for product and services? What is even more appalling is that these are the same people and companies complaining about taxes being too high, and wasteful spending by the government. I wonder, who is to blame for it.
There are many problems with our tax system, but unless we get to the root of the causes, we will never find any solutions. |

It took a lots of money (red and Blue) To make the tax code what it is today. Herman Cains 999 cost him a shot at the Red ticket, not the lady from his past. Might have even been bipartisan effort to take him down. Lack of thinking on a global economy scale is ridiculous. Our government is responsible for jobs leaving not big business. If tax breaks to send jobs over seas is the popular problem then why hasn't the Con man in Chief stopped it? Can anyone produce the law of advantage? Obamacare job destruction is just starting. Jobs may not even leave the country but be eliminated all together. Technology will do it. Learn the term "Lights out manufacturing". Worry about who won, Red team or Blue team when really the Purple team won. America 2.0 LOL! |

I was shocked they actually got anything passed. What I see is a GOP party cannibalizing itself. Its also time to close corporate loopholes and redonkulas tax loopholes that ONLY benefit the wealthy. You know like the 73k deduction Mitt got for taking his show horse to the olympics. Who even come up with some of these things? Congress should not have got any damn pay raises either even tho Obama signed a executive order for that exact thing. I dont think ANY american left or right thinks congress deserves any darn raises!!

The tax code needs to be more linear. The way it was with the Bush tax cuts was that you paid more and more as your income went up until you got to a certain income, then it started going down. I for one think people making over $450k should be paying at least the same rate that I pay. You can't say "But then you're taxing the job creators and they won't be able to create jobs because they pay too much in taxes!" What about a surgeon in a hospital, or an attorney, or an architect, these are all high paying careers and they don't necessarily add employees to their work force when they've had a good year. If a CEO of a major corporation (or the corporation itself since they are supposedly also people) have a good year and show record profits they don't add employees. Recent history has shown that their profits and the number of jobs they outsource (take away from Americans) are both rising. |

No one can calculate what they pay in taxes. The great game in Government is trickle down taxation or pass through taxes. The one index that would make it clear would be spendable dollar index. It is amazing that most think their employer pays half of their SS and Medicare. Tax the rich/corps! LOL! |

The only "new deal" was the tax increases on incomes 400K (450K married filing jointly) and up. The rest of the bill extends what was already in place. The employee's share of the social security that everyone was paying 2 percent less did not extend so all working people will have 2 percent more withheld. |
