Justin Brockmoller, owner of the Nebraska Athletic Club, has created a new Kids Boot Camp to raise awareness and provide a place for kids to combat the problem of childhood obesity.

Heavyweight champion Rob Mitchell will become a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer and Nutrition Specialist, and instruct the boot camp, said Russ Jones, the manager of Midwest Championship Fighting, LLC.

MCF and Brockmoller will share enrollment fees for eight Lincoln County middle school students to attend the kids boot camp.

There are eight middle schools in Lincoln County -- Adams, Madison, North Platte Saint Pat’s, Maxwell, Brady, Hershey, Sutherland and Wallace. Administrators at all eight have been contacted and will be responsible for identifying the scholarship winners, Jones said.

MCF and NAC will split tuition costs for the six-months of boot camp for the eight students. The class costs $50 dollars a month per student.

The camp is expected to begin Saturday, Jan. 13, Jones said.

Camp classes will be held on Saturdays at the Nebraska Athletic Club, except when Mitchell is fighting or attending fights out of the area.

Additionally, on March 16, MCF will bring an MMA event to the D & N Event Center after an agreement was reached with D&N owner Tad Haneborg.

The fight, called the “St. Patrick’s Day Beat Down Bash” will start at 7 p.m. and include at least two professional bouts and hopefully 10 amateur fights, Jones said.

Strikeforce veteran Tony Johnson and Tri-State CageFighting Champion Cody Land, formerly of North Platte, are under consideration for the professional bouts. Land recently scored a Marquez-style knockout at Disorderly Conduct’s Seasons Beatings at Pershing Auditorium in Lincoln.

Also, local fighters Jason Jensen, Justin Thompson, Mercedes Timmerman, Jordan Vigil, Mark Hooper, Derek Thompson, Zac Helton and Jason Windham (now of Lincoln) are training for the amateur bouts.
