A general foreman was flown to the Nebraska Medical Center burn unit in Omaha with first and second degree burns, according to separate sources.

Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis said one worker was treated for burns and released from Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

Separate sources told the Bulletin that two carmen were working under a railcar, removing a damaged center-mounted cushioning device -- a large shock absorber filled with hydraulic oil designed to lessen the impact when cars are hooked together.

A carman was using a cutting torch to remove stops from the damaged device so it could be removed. Heat from the torch apparently ignited hydraulic oil that had leaked from the cylinder, according to sources who asked to remain anonymous for fear of job reprisal.

In turn, the oil reservoir on the device ignited and fire shot out from under the car, burning the two workers as well as Mike Lambert, a general foreman who was reportedly standing next to the car.

Davis said a full investigation is underway.

So close yet so far away from being Darwin Award candidates! This is just common sense, they should have known that hydraulic fluid is flammable since it is their job to work with hydraulics, most people know that.

It is unfortunate that anyone got hurt, not just a Mgr. It's also unfortunate that notmybusiness..but has such issues that they would post such ill on someone, all people in working enviroments have likes, dislikes of people, and may think ill, however the fact that a person would print such a horrible thing about a person & their injury & stating good riddiance,etc... shows a very dark soul. I may not get along with all people& I may not get along with all Mgt. but never do I wish injury upon them & would never sound gleeful about it like notmybusiness..but; Whatever a persons faults they are someones husband, father,& friend. So for the carmen,Mgr. family& friends and those who witnessed & helped In Jesus name I pray for all, and somehow I'm going to say a prayer for notmybusiness..but, because I'm sure they are not perfect and probably have people who don't like them or like working with them, but I doubt that anyone would want them injuried or hurt.

its unfortunate that 2 carmen got hurt with this incident. It will be interesting if the manager involved was rushing them. He has a long history of pushing his employees and over looking safety. I guess getting shocked by a welder not to long ago wasnt enough for mr. manager......good riddance mr manager enjoy your early retirement disfigured and prayers for speedy recovery for the other 2.
