Boys BB: Bulldogs win conference tournamentTell North Platte what you think

COLUMBUS-For the first time in school history, the North Platte High School boys' basketball team won the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (7-3) beat Kearney 44-28 in the tournament finals to win the GNAC for the first time since it was started in 2003.

In the finals against the Bearcats, NPHS struggled with foul trouble and had a lead of just 19-18 at halftime.

But the Dawgs dominated the second half and held Kearney to just 10 points on their way to victory.

Drew Callaghan had 15 points and 16 rebounds in the finals to lead North Platte. Kade Erickson and Jack Kenny also had 12 and 10, respectively.

On Friday, the Bulldogs edged out McCook 48-46 in the semifinals. The game was tight nearly all the way through. The Bison had the lost shot. But Cody Wudtke's shot from 40 feet away at the buzzer did not go through and NPHS avenged the loss earlier in the season to McCook on Dec. 14.

On Thursday, the Dawgs started the GNAC hot by beating Hastings 71-47. It was a shootout with the opposing Tigers making 11 three-pointers in the game. But North Platte made six treys itself and Hastings just couldn't stop Callaghan inside or the penetration of guards Erickson and Kenny.
