Loomis came from behind in the final seconds Thursday to defeat Sutherland 44-42 in the opening round of the Elm Creek Holiday Tournament.

sutherland jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the first quarter but Loomis slowly fought their way back to trail 32-28 going into the final quarter.

Loomis got within two points as the clock wound down. After a missed shot, Loomis came up with an offensive rebound and put the ball back in to tie the game with 20 seconds left. On the same play, Sutherland was whistled for a foul away from the ball.

Loomis converted the free throw to take the lead. Sutherland missed a shot on the other end of the court. Loomis got the rebound and was deliberately fouled, then hit a free throw. Enough time remained for Sutherland to take a last second shot, but it rimmed out, Coach Jason Gunderson said.

Sam Kennedy scored 17 points for Sutherland to lead all scorers. Her teammate Joli Hopping has 10, including two three-pointers.

Paige Thorell led Loomis with 14 points and Tori Maaskie scored 10.

Sutherland (7-2) applied full court man-to-man pressure against Elm Creek (1-8) and held a commanding 41-7 lead at halftime.

"I think we took out some frustrations from the night before," Sutherland Head Coach Jason Gunderson said. "Our shots were falling early and they got a little rattled."

Joli Hopping hit three treys for the Sailors in the first quarter.

Sutherland showed offensive balance with four players in double figures. Sam Staggs had 14; Kaley Stokey and Sam Kennedy each had 12 and Hopping 11.

"I was real pleased with our offense," Gunderson said. "Last night we forced the ball a little bit, but tonight we let the game come to us."

Elm Creek's Jackie Burke led her team on offense with six points.
