Temperatures are cool at times inside the Hotel Pawnee Assisted Living Facility in North Platte as new heaters are being installed.

The 83-year-old hotel is heated by two boilers that send hot water heat through the building. One boiler quit working last spring and the other one has been operating intermittently.

Electric baseboard heaters are being installed in rooms. Space heaters are also used in some rooms. Heaters will be installed in the lobby, executive director Sandy Schade said Dec. 22.

The temperature was comfortable in the rooms Saturday, according to a random check on two separate floors.

The Pawnee is one of the few places in central and western Nebraska devoted to providing care to people with behavioral and/or emotional disabilities that have extremely low incomes, including those who are solely supported by Medicaid.

Schade refused to talk to the Bulletin, but through text messages said the situation is improving.

The hotel is currently home to about 50 residents. Each of them pays about $1,050 a month for room and meals.

Schade has said the financial challenges are significant.

During the summer, the hotel was placed on probation by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. The board was ordered to hire a consultant to oversee the operation and make monthly reports to HHS for one year.

Thanks truth for the good estimates & $$ breakdown. However, I don't recall more than 73 residents this summer and there were more employees then. I believe their capacity is less than 80, if I recall correctly from their license. To me, this is a tragedy. Mental health care/treatment all over is much more of a failure than a success; we have to do better.

Not sure how true this is but heard Red Cross was there are took residents down to lobby to sleep because it was soooo cold, If this was animals there would be charges filed against those responsible, Where is the state????? And there are other facilities across the state who take in the mentally ill, yes most these people dont want to move but they need to be safe, fed, and warm

Have talked with some employees there current and former, They are still 3 months behind on wages with some and some former employees are just out over 2 to 3 thousands dollars each, Do the math If there are 50 resident at 1052 a month that is 52600 coming in, figure 25,000 in wages(LOL that not really getting paid) as there are about 15 employees left, and most dont make more than 1600 a month, figure 10000 in utilites (thats not paid as they are behind), another 5000 in supplies(which usually they dont even have toliet paper there) another 5000 in food ( which most of the food comes in donation from Walmart Distribution) another 5000 in insurance. We at 50000. They were at 88 residents not to far back. Figure the math. Wheres the money. Employees former and current say theres not supplies bought as they have to go to Alco and beg for donation of toliet paper, no food, only serve what Walmart has donated, behind on wages, Guesswork on utilites but probably close. Where in all these years especially when they were full has the money gone. Someone needs to investigate

There is no place that wants these people and especially at the low rates. They have no place to go and no one wants people with those kinds of problems. The Pawnee is trying but just doesn't have the money. Maybe you can kick in some money to be of some help. This place is the last stop for some of these people before living on the street.
