A Minnesota man was tragically killed early Thursday morning in a fatal accident four miles east of North Platte interchange on Interstate-80. The eastbound lanes of I-80 have been closed at North Platte since then. On the icy roads, a minivan slid into a semi-trailer that was stopped because of another wreck ahead of it. A man in the passenger seat -- Lindley Hughes, 63, of New Hope, Minn. -- was killed and the roof of the van was partially torn off, Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins said. The man’s wife, Janet Hughes, 60, was driving. Janet Hughes was taken to the Great Plains Regional Medical Center. The accident happened about 1 a.m. The semi-driver, Ted Faatz of Council Bluffs, was not injured. Crews spent nearly 12 hours cleaning up debris and removing vehicles. Winds gusted to near 40 degrees, coupled with high humidity, below freezing temperatures and snow Wednesday. The snow stopped around 7 p.m. in North Platte, but the roads were extremely slick through the night. It was a busy day for the Nebraska State Patrol and all law enforcement agencies, emergency responders and road crews.
