Cell towers rejectedTell North Platte what you think

Viaero Wireless failed Tuesday to get approval for cell towers in North Platte to provide seamless coverage to customers.

Viaero faced a public outcry, similar to the protests in May when the company wanted to erect a 100-foot tower on the corner of Fourth and Willow.

This time around, Viaero hoped to build two towers. One would be at Eighth and Willow, inside a residential area, a couple blocks from the Union Pacific railroad main line. The other was slated for at corner of West E and Sherman, near the First United Methodist Church.

The towers would be 20 feet shorter than the tower the company proposed in May, but the shorter height did not stem the tide of protests.

Earlier, the North Platte Planning Commission voted to not recommend the permit. They said that the tower would not be in harmony with the character and normal use of the area.

At the last minute, the application for the tower at West E was pulled from the council agenda, even though it is the heart of the coverage area that Viaero needs, according to the company's application. The property owners – the church – asked that the request be removed from consideration.

Residents near Eighth and Willow expressed fear of damage to property values and detrimental radiation effects over the long term. Residents noted the tower would be near a school and expressed concern for the health of the children.

In the application, Viaero said the tower was needed to provide 4G coverage -- a high capacity coverage that allows smart phones to function like computers.

Viaero said the tower could increase property values because smart phones will carry more data, 911 calls and responses would improve, and the coverage would benefit both residents and businesses, promoting economic development.

But residents who spoke were all opposed.

Roy Welch, 315 W. Seventh, said he is “just three years away from retiring and I want to feel sure that I’m going to make that with good health. I don’t want my property value to drop and I really don’t want this big tower just outside my back door.”

During discussion, Councilman Jim Carman said he put himself in the place of the residents, and he would not want a tower near his house.

“I must consider the feeling of those that live in that neighborhood too,” Carman said.

The council voted 8-0 against the application.

Oh heaven forbid! I can see power lines from my bathroom window when I'm sitting on the toilet! I guess we're going to have to do without electricity since we don't want an eyesore.

Since 2010, the home mortgage laws changed. It is impossible to get a home loan for purchases or for refinancing if you have a tower (electrical or cell) too close to your home.

They're worried about radiation of cell phone towers when they constantly have their own phone stuck to the side of their heads. There is so much stray RF in the air that you can't avoid it unless you live inside a faraday cage, whether its broadcast media or two way radio or cell phones or your own tv or the field put off by the motor in your vacuum. You just can't hide.

what gets me is they are concerned for the health of their children. My Lord people we live in North Platte NE. We have Bailey yard and on any given day when the wind is not blowing there is a brown tint to the air. Really you are worried about at phone tower. Please.

I don't think it really works that way, nebred. They are limited by the FCC as to how much power they can transmit and with the cost of the equipment it would be a prudent investment to go full power. What they might be able to do though is use higher gain antennas, but then basically what they are doing is extending the grey area where your phone has weaker reception out farther. The best thing that they can do is more towers.

Or instead of putting up more towers why not make the ones now more powerful to reach farther or have a mini tower that can be put on a house to pull in the signal ?

something we can agree on nebred. I think the pawnee hotel or water tower is a awesome suggestion. Only wish I had thought of it. lol Anyways surely they can find a place to put the darn things. Time to move forward. I don't see how a cell tower lowers property values anyways? they are everywhere these days. Well with the exception of good ole north platte.. loo

Viaero. Out West they have everything West of Ogallala in 4G - here its 2G. Already suggested your idea and it seems that has already been asked and answered by those companies (already have too many or wont do it). The 4G works really slick out there... even 1/2 way between Bridgeport and Scottsbluff... just simply impressive! But, here...nada.

Hey, I just read this, It sure sounds crazy, but here's my comment, so trash me maybe.....vote it down, morons... It's like the Huskers being in Norman, Oklahoma back in the 80's on Thanksgiving game day and expecting to get a penalty call to go your way...What do you think radar, radio antennas, short wave radio antennas, television antennas, satellite dishes, Computer monitors, your cell phone itself, power lines, microwave ovens, water lines, a hybrid car, flying in an airplanes, trains (gee...wonder if we have any of those here), WiFi, Bluetooth and even our own bodies and hormone functions are all regulated by their own electromagnetic fields - this and all other forms of those waves are? It's all the same thing - just electromagnetic fields and magnetic radiation oscillating at different frequencies. Even your television remote control is a form of a radio frequency (infra-red) and your wireless router...how many waves do you think those put out? How about remote control cars, boats and airplanes? Sometimes, you have to wonder about the education level of the people making these decisions and if they really have any clue on what they are talking about. It's a wonder that they just don't fall down more... It is just insane to think - some of us actually voted for these people to make decisions for us. Bring the tower over to my house...I want the 4G. Put it right next to my Ham Radio antenna, satellite dish, WiFi booster and the squirrels in my alley. Sign me up please - it's sad that Bridgeport, Chappell, Bayard, Scottsbluff, Kimball, Big Springs, Sidney, Ogallala and Oshkosh have 4G coverage but the booming metropolis of North Platte won't allow for progress...just sad!!!!

I do understand these people's concerns. But, I'm sure that people also want good cell service, and for that to happen, we need towers. The Not In My Backyard attitude never gets us very far.

My stupid phone doesn't work right, that phone company should do something about it. Just like big business they don't even try to help if only they listened to the people, blah, blah, blah.

It is absolutely amazing what can happen once you get rid of some of the dead weight on city council ! For once I can say "Good Job".
