A North Platte woman was sent to prison Monday, during action in Lincoln County District Court.

Elizabeth Cardenas, 49, of North Platte, was sentenced to a year and a half to four years in the state prison for attempted second degree assault.

On June 17, Cardenas used a large knife to stab her husband in the back during a domestic argument. Tom Cardenas told police that he and his drunken wife had an altercation and some glass had been broken. While he was cleaning up the glass, Elizabeth stabbed him from behind.

His injuries were not serious and were attended to at the scene.

Elizabeth Cardenas pleaded no contest on Oct. 29, after a charge of tampering with a witness was dropped in a plea bargain.

Chief Deputy Lincoln County Attorney Tonya Roberts-Connick asked for jail time in the sentencing, citing Cardenas’ long record dating back to 1985, which includes alcohol related crimes, assaults, false reporting and thefts, some resulting in jail time.

In the presentence investigation report the District 11 Probation Office recommended no probation. In issuing the sentence, Lincoln County Judge Donald Rowlands said, “We are fortunate here that wasn’t a homicide and the defendant is a high risk to re-offend.”
