At around 8 p.m. Friday, a North Platte police officer went to the emergency room at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in response to a juvenile boy who was reportedly under the influence of prescription drugs.

The boy's parent contacted police, Police Information Officer Rodney Brown said. The boy reportedly took the pills earlier while he was at Adams Middle School.

Following a preliminary investigation, the officer determined that there was probable cause to arrest a second boy for distribution of metadate, a controlled substance commonly used to treat attention deficit disorder.

Three other juveniles were disciplined at the school, Brown said.

Metadate can have serious side effects, including nervousness, nausea, vomiting, or headache, and in some cases fainting, seizure, symptoms of a heart attack (such as chest/jaw/left arm pain, shortness of breath, unusual sweating) or stroke (such as weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, sudden vision changes and confusion,) according to a host of medical authorities.
