What can we do? Twenty first-grade children are dead in Newtown, Conn., slain by a 20-year-old man with an assault rifle.

The man, Adam Lanza, shot and killed 26 people in the Sandy Hook elementary school First, he killed his mother at home, where the two lived, then he drove her car to the school and broke in.

Lanza took his guns from his mother. She was an avid gun user.

He was said to be painfully shy and ill at ease around other people, as well as an honor student.

Twenty of those killed were first graders, ages 6-7. The other six were adults in the school – the principal, the school counselor and four teachers.

Lanza shot himself at the end of his spree, using a handgun, police said. By that time, he had fired hundreds of rounds inside the school, reloaded his assault rifle several times with cartridges that each contained 30 shots, police said Sunday.

The tragedy, coming a few days after a shooting in an Oregon mall, (as well as lesser known shootings around the country,) and not all that long after a young man shot up a movie theater on the outskirts of Denver, has gripped the nation’s attention.

These were children.

It is difficult to know what to do. How can we possibly react positively to such a massive breakdown of our society?

Connecticut is a long ways from Nebraska, but we can send a few dollars their way. To see how, click HERE.

And we can take better care of one another.

That we can do, no matter how we feel about the firestorm of debate that is erupting about gun control.

A few days ago, as I was writing a report about graffiti around town, I interviewed Dave Lund, a counselor in North Platte for more than 27 years. I wasn’t able to include Dave’s thoughts in the print paper because of space limits, but what he said couldn’t be more timely, today.

(Lund does not perceive a lot of a gang activity in town. He hasn’t made a study, but his estimation is at most 2-3 percent of youth are involved.)

Lund, who is currently a therapist at Cornerstone Counseling in North Platte, said it is key to help youth grow not just a healthy body and a good mind, but a healthy self image.

He said scouting, church groups, athletics and music programs are relatively plentiful in North Platte, and are great things for kids. And he said mentorship programs make a tremendous amount of difference.

Healthy adults who are a role model and give guidance to kids about how to spend time and be involved -- that’s invaluable.

“What we become is based on what we are involved in,” he said. “It defines who we are becoming,” Lund said of young adults. He could be talking about us all.

Of course, a young person’s self-concept and identity is troubled if they have difficulties that cause them to withdraw. Solitary time is important, but you have to be with people to feel loved, and healthy.

Those who begin to identify themselves as rejected and troubled, and seek the company of similar people -- naturally become a gang member in the making, Lund said.

And of course, there is naturally the possibility of an isolated soul who can get extremely angry and seek to make noise. In the worst case, deafening noise.

With any sign of behavioral problems, there is usually advance warning in earlier years, Lund said. Some patterns emerge by ages 9-12. And it is relatively easy to change that pattern, because children are constantly changing as they grow.

Not that such situations are confined to children, or only to young adults. Anyone can be troubled. Many of us remember the seeming rash of adults who “went postal” in previous decades, shooting up distribution centers.

Nearly every religion calls on us to respect one another -- and respect ourselves.

That can be difficult to do, given the competition amongst us for attention, love, resources and financial success.

But there are times and places for us to show each other that we see, we understand and we care. There are times and places to show each other that we are friendly souls traveling through the world, and even if we compete sometimes, we are much more than competitors.

We need to be sure such times are part of our lives.

Even a few kind words can make a lot of difference. A few kind words regularly given can make a bigger difference. And a few respectful, loving talks can make all the difference.

For the sake of 26 people who were gunned down for no good reason in Connecticut...for the losses of that small community – a town the size of North Platte...for the aching despair of their family and friends…reach out. Make time to show yourself, to let others show themselves, and to care.

The post office in Newtown, Connecticut, where a gunman shot and killed 27 people, including 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary School, has been inundated with calls from around the world asking where to send hand-written messages of support or condolence. In order to accommodate all those inquiries they've set up a special address: Message of Condolence PO Box 3700 Newtown, CT 06470 This was reported on HLN this morning.

I myself am not a gun user sako, so yeah, you're probably right, my "ignorance on the subject is evident". But hopefully my desire for change and sympathy for people is also. Merry Christmas!

@TDR, it is probably best if you do not make further attempts to debate styles of firearms since your ignorance on the topic is so evident. If you are as you say a gun user and target shooter you should educate yourself at least a little and not make assumptions based on what is being spread by the uninformed. This style of firearm that you don't think I or anyone else that is not military or law enforcement should have access to operates in much the same way as what you supposedly target shoot with. You can not spray bullets any faster than you can with "normal hunting/target" firearms. The trigger has to be pulled for each and every discharge. They can fire as fast as you can pull the trigger. That is exactly the same as a semi automatic shotgun, .22, .45 or whatever. High capacity firearms with semiautomatic actions have been available legally every since they have been invented. The previous ban applied to high capacity, detachable magazines but not self contained high capacity. The previous ban or the upcoming proposed ban will not do anything to stop a criminal with the intention to do harm. We have to stop being so reactive in this country by imposing all these new and restrictive laws that only serve to make lawmakers feel better and inconvenience law abiding citizens.

sako, I am no gun expert and I don't pretend to be. But I think it's pretty obvious that the style of weapon used is one to spray a large amount of bullets in a short amount of time. I am just saying that I feel that type of weapon has no use in the hands of regular citizens. Sorry if you disagree. And, I come from a family that uses guns to hunt and target shoot. I'm not going to get into a personal debate with you though, thanks.

Sadly Luckymother, you make alot of good points. How many here have the nerve to Google what she said. I know I have. And I can say most of what we hear on the main stream news stations, is the same BS you get from an info-mercial.

First off my heart and prayers goes out to these families. It wasn't the gun that killed these people it was the man. On the same day a man stabbed 22 kids in China(google it) and Timothy Mcveigh used fertilizer,911 they used box cutters and planes & the nazis used cynanide.Hitler used gun control to take over the nation. We do not need the goverment control of our guns, what next knifes or telling us what kind of car we can drive or how many kids we are allowed to have and so on. Bad people are going to find ways to do bad things no matter what.Wake up people see where we are headed. Google Disarming the Australion population and see how that back fired and the home invations have increased among other crimes because the bad guys are still able to the guns they need .Gun control is not the answer.

@TDR, what are you referring to when you say this style of firearm? The color, the pistol grip, the flash suppressor, the detachable magazine or caliber? If it was a wood stocked .22 would that have made the ordeal less horrific? Banning a firearm based on style is useless.

thanks for making the point tess... sometimes medications seem to be rampant.

Regarding assault weapons, the reason given for them is precaution in the extreme possibility that society falls apart. For instance in Syria detention, torture and disappearances have been too common. The founding fathers were aware that governments can sometimes turn against their own people. That seems to be the motivation for the second amendment.

I think its been proven recently that if bad guys want guns they're going to get them one way or another. Saying "we might as well outlaw crack and heroin" brings up a good point. Banning guns will only expand an already existing criminal enterprise that is gun smuggling.

Outlawing guns will keep them off the street and out the hands of criminals? Let’s outlaw crack and heroin while we are at it then.

NO ONE except for military and law enforcement needs to own the style of weapon used to commit these murders.

To all of you gun-control advocates ... Please name one piece of new legislation that would have prevented this tragedy. The shooter broke multiple gun laws, what makes you think that he would have cared about one more?

Was anyone really surprised that this happened? I wish I could say that this surprised me but it did not. It will keep happening until guns are controlled. Until then, watch your back.

I'm going to take the 2nd amendment route and say that gun control is not the issue here. The guy was not in a good state of mind and it sounds like he had kind of a rocky upbringing, Friday happened to be the day that he made a very wrong decision. They say the guns he used belonged to his mother who he lived with and who taught him how to shoot, the guy who shot up the mall in Oregon stole the rifle he used, and the Colorado theater shooter bought everything semi anonymously on the internet. There are the reasons why gun control won't prevent mass murders. Sane people legally own guns and use them safely, sometimes insane people steal those guns. One thing we can do to help prevent these tragedies would be to ban the sale of guns and ammo on the internet, and make it cash only with no credit card sales of guns or ammo, and extend the two week waiting period for buying a handgun extend out to buying all guns. Its not a 100% perfect fix but it will help, its a step in the right direction any way.

With all due respect, a deranged psychopath can kill just as many innocents with 1-2 guns as 5...

Limiting gun ownership to two guns has got to be one of the stupidest solutions I have heard put forth. This most recent incident, and many others, has zero to do with gun ownership, style of firearm, type of ammo or any other inanimate object. The blame lies solely with the individual. If he did not use guns he would have used other means. Passing "knee jerk" legislation will only make those voting to pass it feel better about themselves. Banning the sale of any firearm does nothing to address the tens of millions already in existence. Why is it after every shooting tragedy we go after those who did not do the shooting?

Why more gun control? Nearly every peer reviewed study shows that gun control has no effect on crime or causes crime rates to go up. Its not being reported by the main stream media and assuming its true, the Clackamas shooter was confronted by a CCW (no shots fired) but it was enough for the shooter to off himself. It irritates me that no one will actually post real information about what gun control does. http://theacru.org/acru/harvard_study_gun_control_is_counterproductive/ and there are many more studies to link to.

The problem is gun control. We as a country should not let anyone own more than a couple of guns. Why would you need more than 2 or 3. There won't be a zombie apocalypse anytime soon. Our government needs to take control of this situation soon before this crap happens near us.

One thing that the mainstream media is not talking about is the role that pharmaceutical drugs have played in almost every single mass murder in the United States in recent years. The following is from a recent Natural News article… In mass shootings involving guns and mind-altering medications, politicians immediately seek to blame guns but never the medication. Nearly every mass shooting that has taken place in America over the last two decades has a link to psychiatric medication, and it appears today’s tragic event is headed in the same direction. According to ABC News, Adam Lanza, the alleged shooter, has been labeled as having “mental illness” and a “personality disorder.” These are precisely the words typically heard in a person who is being “treated” with mind-altering psychiatric drugs. One of the most common side effects of psychiatric drugs is violent outbursts and thoughts of suicide. And guess what? According to the Washington Post, one neighbor is telling the press that Adam Lanza was “on medication”. Is anyone surprised? But of course the mainstream media will never call for a ban on mind-altering pharmaceutical drugs. The companies that produce those drugs spend billions of dollars to advertise on their networks. And as horrific as this crisis was, let us not be blind to what is happening all around us every day. Adam Lanza murdered 20 children in cold blood and that was a crime for which there are not words strong enough to denounce it. However, more than 100 times as many children are killed in the abortion clinics of America every single day, and most of our politicians stand up and publicly defend the slaughter of those innocents. We have covered America with the blood of our own children, and yet hardly anyone speaks up about this anymore.
