North Platte cowboy wins go round at national finals rodeoTell North Platte what you think

Todd Suhn, who was born and raised in North Platte, scored his biggest win of the week Wednesday at the 10-day, $6 million Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in front of 17,245 fans.

The 39-year-old veteran, competing for the 16th time at rodeo’s Super Bowl, wrestled his steer in 3.6 seconds to win the seventh round and $18,257. It was Suhn’s first go-round win at the NFR since 2010.

“My buddy Jeff Johnston is hazing for me out here this year,” said Suhn. “We grew up in high school and college rodeo together, and he hazed for me when I won the national championship at the College National Finals Rodeo in 1996.”

Johnston also brought Dru Melvin’s great horse Moonshine to Suhn’s place for a practice session, and it was on Moonshine that Suhn scored the big win tonight. Melvin is from Tryon, while Johnston hails from Thedford.

Suhn entered the NFR in ninth place in the world standings, and had dropped to 10th after a slow first few rounds in Las Vegas.

He trails leader Luke Branquinho by more than $50,000. However, four rounds remain, each paying out nearly $60,000, so plenty of meat is left on the bone, so to speak.
