North Platte St. Pat's got out to a big lead in the first half on Tuesday and never looked back to win 74-40 over Perkins County at the McGahan Activities Center.
"We did a good job of running the floor," said St. Pat's coach Nathan Stienike. "When we rebound and get out in transition, that's when we play our best basketball."
But at first, Perkins County (1-4) succeeded in grounding the high-flying Lady Irish. St. Pats' pressure defense didn't seem to bother the Plainswomen and the Irish were only up 19-10 at the end of the first quarter.
"Perkins County came out and they were able to break our pressure pretty easily," Stienike said. "It was back and fourth for a while."
But a minute and a half into the second quarter, Samantha Byrn made an 18-foot jump shot for the Lady Irish to score the first points of the second. After getting the margin over the 10-point mark, St. Pat's (4-0) started to roll.
The lead became 20 on a basket by Kari Slattery near the end of the first half and it was 41-20 at halftime.
"We were also missing shots (in the first quarter) that fell in the second," said Stienike. "We just kept attacking the basket."
The Irish continued to pour it on in the third quarter bringing the lead to 30 points before Stienike brought in the reserves to close out the game.
