With 42 points in the second half on Saturday, the North Platte High School girls' basketball team blew past Hastings 71-37 at the Dawg House. North Platte (1-1) had good balance on offense with Madalynn Doughty, Ashten Hernandez, Kaitlynn Harvey and Sally Hengen combining for 61 points. "If we can get four in double figures we're very tough to stop," said NPHS coach Mark Woodhead. The Lady Bulldogs scored the first eight points of the game and then they took a 13-3 lead halfway through the first quarter on a Doughty three-pointer. North Platte led 21-8 at the end of the first quarter before Hastings (0-2) scored the first eight points of the second. But the Lady Dawgs distanced themselves late in the first half and led 29-18 after Doughty made an 18 foot jumper with 1:27 left until halftime. Mattie Stokes scored the last basket for Hastings to make it 29-20 at the half. In the third quarter, Hastings pulled within five but the Lady Tigers just couldn't stop NPHS. The six-foot senior Hernandez scored anytime she got the ball on the low block and that freed up the outside. "Ashten creates a tough cover when she's playing again smaller girls and that ended up opening it up for us," Woodhead said. North Platte led 47-35 at the end of the third before blowing it open in the fourth, outscoring Hastings 24-2 in the final period.
