A fight on Thanksgiving day turned ugly, when a North Platte man was allegedly stabbed in a business district on East Fourth.

Quincey Shugart, 34, of North Platte is in jail on a $100,000 bond, charged with assault with a weapon.

Shugart is believed to have stabbed Luke Ressegieu, 23, around 1 p.m. near Hunt’s Construction, just as a family in the building next door was about to sit down to Thanksgiving dinner.

Melinda Streeter, who owns the restaurant next door, said her business was closed and her family had gathered for dinner. They were just about ready to eat when her nephew saw two men fighting in front of the construction garage next door.

Streeter's brother checked it out and yelled that one of the men was stabbing the other. Streeter called police.

During a lull in the fighting, the victim asked for help and was taken to the restaurant for protection, where he remained until police and an ambulance arrived.

When police arrived, they found a vehicle parked behind the restaurant with what appeared to be blood in and around the car, police information officer Rodney Brown said. Ressegieu was taken to Great Plains Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for cuts to his neck and torso.

Shurgart took off on foot and was eventually caught north of the railroad tracks. Members of the Nebraska State Patrol and Lincoln County Sheriff’s office, including K9 Handler Deputy Jeff Gaasch and the dog Zeigo helped with the search. Officers traced Shugart to the 1700 block of E. Sixth and eventually found him north of UPRR property, Brown said.

Brown said police also seized prescription drugs and what is believed to be methamphetamine as well as drug paraphernalia. The drug investigation continues.

Shugart is charged with for second degree aggravated assault with a weapon.

Priors

Shugart was sentenced to 2-4 years in the state prison in 2010 for first-degree domestic assault after he beat his wife, who had four fractures of her arm, according to the Bulletin archives and court records.

At the time, defense attorney Marty Troshynski said Shugart was raised in an abusive situation and was extremely remorseful.

Shugart became eligible for parole in June 2011, thanks to the goodtime provision, which can cut prison time in half for inmates with good behavior. He was released from the penitentiary earlier this year.

Ressegieu also has an extensive arrest record. He's been arrested 10 times since 2010 on such charges as assaults, DUIs and failures to appear, according to sheriff's records.
