Stephen Marquez, 23, of North Platte failed to signal a lane change as he drove through North Platte late Monday night and he landed in jail on firearms charges.

Marquez’s passenger was also charged as an accessory to a felony.

Just before midnight, a North Platte police officer noticed a green Honda Civic change lanes without signaling and pulled it over, Police Information Officer John Deal said.

While talking with the driver, Marquez, the officer saw drug paraphernalia in the car. A drug-detection dog was called to check the car and indicated the odor of drugs. Police searched the car and found two handguns and a shotgun.

Marquez, a convicted felon, was arrested and jailed for possession of firearms.

His passenger, Kenneth E. Cassell, 30, of North Platte, made inconsistent statements about the guns and gave contradictory information to investigators. Cassell was taken to the jail and charged with accessory to a felony.

Marquez has been arrested in Lincoln County several times since 2011, for Driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, failure to appear, being a fugitive from justice and possession of K-2, a synthetic drug. Cassell has no prior Lincoln County arrests, according to sheriff’s records.
