Christopher Herring, 19, of North Platte, was convicted Thursday of attempted possession of a forged instrument (a check).

Herring was sentenced to 90 days jail. He is also held for parole violation.

Herring was arrested on Oct. 29 after he tried to cash a forged check at the Great Western Bank branch in the Westfield Shopping Plaza. He was found by tracking his electronic ankle bracelet that he wears because he is on parole from the state pentitiary.

Police said he’d first taken the check to the Great Western’s main bank but was turned away.

In court, Deputy Lincoln County Attorney Austin Leighty said Herring first went to the downtown bank with a Twin Valley Communications check, with no amount filled out, although it was signed. Leighty said Herring asked for a balance on the Twin Valley account. The bank refused to provide it and he was turned away.

Later he presented the check at the Westfield branch for $5,600 and attempted to cash it. A bank employee called the account owner and was told no one a the company wrote the check. Herring was again turned away. A bank employee called police, who located Herring using GPS tracking.

Herring was sent to the pen in January on an escape charge. He was serving a 270-day jail sentence for theft, assault and criminal mischief when he was taken to the Great Plains Regional Medical Center’s behavioral health center for a psychological exam. There, he grabbed a chair, threatened to throw it at a counselor but instead threw it through a window and climbed out. He was apprehended a few blocks away.

DiGiovanni

Dylan DiGiovanni, 20, of North Platte was arraigned on an amended charge of accessory to a felony/providing transportation, which was lowered from theft by taking.

Dylan still has pending court appearances on theft by taking charges, a failure to appear charge and a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is in jail held on two consecutive $10,000 bonds.

DiGiovanni allegedly stole items from Miller Repair in Maxwell from November 2011 to October 2012, as well as a purse stolen from a car, and is implicated in the theft of laptops reportedly stolen in August from the Maxwell school.

Kyer Feeney of North Platte is suspected of being the primary burglar at the school.

Rodriguez

Accused of punching a cop outside of Kelsey’s Bar, Johnny Rodriquez 26, of North Platte waived his preliminary hearing on charges of aggravated assault of a police officer and disturbing the peace. His bond was set at $5,000.

Rodriguez was arrested at about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, after North Platte Police Officers were called to Kelsey’s Bar on the report of a disturbance. Officers said they saw Rodriquez standing outside the front door of the bar yelling at a woman sitting in a car. Rodriquez refused to do what the police told him and became aggressive toward the woman. When the officers tried to restrain him he punched one of them, earning him a ride to jail.
