Will the country go to pot?Tell North Platte what you think

With the return of President Obama to the White House, cynics fear the national debt will quickly soar and the country will sink into the quagmire of socialism.

Obama supporters say he will keep the country from being owned and controlled by relatively few super-wealthy companies and individuals.

They hope manufacturing will return to the U.S., the economy will steadily recover and the middle class will make, and spend, more.

What do you think?

What's in store now? Four years of progress or four years of decline?

I think there's plenty of reason for someone to be cynical, after all we live in a place where two buildings are hit by planes and three buildings fall, then it's the people who question how this can be are ridiculed. Yup, seems about right.....

Ya, the tea party type conspiracy folks, endowed with impeccability, probably have the inside track to truth but to paraphrase Rudyard Kipling, "Of all the liars in the world, sometimes the worst are your own fears."  .btw: my usage of local wasn't necessarily synonymous with loco, nor was my usage of yokel necessarily synonymous with local, but my usage of the phrase loco yokel was synonymous with Donald Trump, Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachman, Joe "you lie" Wilson, etc. and their admirers. So, if the shoe fits, wear it, but don't expect reasonable people to take your wardrobe serious.

Sorry for being such a local yokel but I don't believe the attack took place on consulate soil. Therefore it seems that Congress would have to determine the actual circumstances. That's where the criminal actions of the executive branch and the press come into play. I think close to an act of war describes it best due to that. I guess my cynicism has somehow been overcome by naivete. I'll work on that if my apathy allows me time.

Civilians, aka loco yokels living in an Orwellian society, claiming possession of empirical knowledge (facts) in matters concerning governmental military actions, including press releases, are naive: Suggestion - turn off your TV, play a game of 'clue'™, then do something honorable for our wounded war veterans - you've disgusted some of us with general naivety appearently beyond your moral comprehension, i.e. your claim "close to an act of war". IT IS WAR! BTW: oxymoronic =  a warring military empire with integrity.

FreeWheelingFranklin, in the past the attack at Benghazi would've been considered close to an act of war. The ensuing and ongoing coverup, with a complicit media participating, is a scandal. Lies, stonewalling and misdirection are the marks of a complete lack of integrity.

Diogenes, I tend to lean toward agreement with most positions you've taken, unequivocally embracing your accusation - "most Americans are ignorant of our history as a nation ..." - thank you for investing the time for the "in-depth" share - but, Benghazi was an attack on us, it was not a scandal. Here's some perspective: Under the watchful eyes of President George W. Bush eleven U.S. embassies were attacked resulting in 53 deaths and 90 injuries. Perspective: I personally wish all were capable of it and more would utilize it while discussing all matters effecting humanity.

Part 1 George, for starters - wrong verb tense. We have already gone to pot. Not just this election, but also the last couple of decades, has shown us what we are as a nation. Let’s deal with the issue of George Bush right at the start. He was not a good president and deserves much of the blame he gets from Obama supporters. 1. He first proposed the TARP bailout, though at a lesser amount than would be spent. “Under our proposal, the federal government would put up to $700 billion taxpayer dollars on the line to purchase troubled assets that are clogging the financial system.” - George Bush September 24, 2008. Those who want to defend him from the charges that Obama inherited a mess should stop reacting and do some research. At a fundamental level Bush wasn’t doing anything much differently than any of his predecessors. Ostensibly it’s all been an attempt to spend our nation to prosperity using money backed by the government’s promises. When they are in control the supposed fiscally responsible Republicans have continued to spend us into massive debt. Once again, if you are a Republican or just don’t like Obama, do some research and face the truth. 2. It was under Bush that the freedom destroying Patriot Act was passed. I have heard repeatedly how we were protected from terrorists because of the bold leadership he showed. There’s simply no real way to prove or disprove it, though it seems pretty suspect since our border with Mexico is a veritable sieve. It’s a bit like saying that the earth hasn’t fallen into the sun because Al Gore is concerned about the environment. 3. Bush certainly did get a lot of foreigners killed. “At least 132,000 civilians have died from 10 years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a new study by Brown University. And that’s a conservative estimate.” http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2011/06/afghanistan-iraq-wars-killed-132000-civilians-report-says Check out both civilian and military casualties here. http://www.casualty-monitor.org/ It’s helped turn us into a nation of warmongers and we’ve grown callous to the suffering of others in the process. It’s all justified because they are co-religionists with those who attacked us and I suppose it helps that they dress and smell funny. Of course there’s more but the real focus for today should be 4. Bush is no longer president and in case you hadn’t noticed he hasn’t been for all of Obama’s first term.

Part 2 Obama didn’t run his campaign on his past record for a very good reason. 1. He never had the usual qualifications to be the leader of the USA. That doesn’t mean he isn’t qualified but it does mean that we should expect an unusual amount of media scrutiny into his background. Something like what they did to Romney, which was perfectly normal for today’s media. What do we know for sure about this man? I’m not talking about what his two ghost written autobiographies say but what we can know from information readily available. Nor am I talking about shadowy conspiracies. Just the usual things we want to know about the commander in chief of our armed forces. You know, the man who has his finger on the proverbial red button. Is it asking too much to wonder why he won’t release the most basic information? Be honest, neither the media nor the average citizen would have put up with this from any of our past presidents. If you want some food for thought check this out. I’m not saying everything on here is conclusive but it should make you ask some questions of your own. http://www.theobamafile.com/ObamaEducation.htm 2. As every politician he made many campaign promises, most of which he promptly broke. Some of them are harder to bear than others and should have people asking serious questions. He promised "an unprecedented level of openness in government." This is the kind of promise that should be assumed of every president, and yes that includes Bush. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/barackobama/8848715/Barack-Obama-accused-of-breaking-transparency-pledge.html As with Bush there is much more on this topic but this should suffice. 3. While castigating Bush for putting us in a mess financially Obama has done more of the same. By the way, while he was a senator Obama voted for the $700 billion bailout. ‘"This is what we need to do right now to prevent the possibility of a crisis turning into a catastrophe," Obama said on the Senate floor.’ http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/10/01/national/main4493155.shtml That was simply the beginning. http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/02/04/business/20090205-bailout-totals-graphic.html Doesn’t it seem a bit disingenuous to lambaste someone for doing what you not only backed at the time but carried to much greater extremes? 4. If you’re unfamiliar with the shameful incident at Benghazi you can be forgiven since the mainstream media has run interference for the administration. http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Journalism/2012/10/25/CBS-Busts-Obama--and-Itself-Hidden-60-Minutes-Clip-Proves-White-House-Lied-About-Benghazi They kept much of this under wraps until the election was over. A US ambassador is murdered and it’s blamed on a pathetic YouTube video. http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-TV/2012/10/28/Report-Obama-Watched-Benghazi-Attack-From-Situation-Room http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2012/09/29/Benghazi-Gate-Timeline-What%20Government-Knew-What-they-Said Of course since these opinions and news stories aren’t from CNN, etc. many of you won’t believe. At least be honest and admit that if this had happened under Bush you’d be outraged and calling for resignation or impeachment. What you should be outraged about is the lack of reporting by the major media. 5. If the past offers us a glimpse of the future then we need to be very concerned. We have had a president who promised to fundamentally change our nation. Now he has four more years to continue the transformation that he started. The question that should have been asked of him was this; since we are a representative Republic exactly what do you intend to transform us into? He has alienated our friends, bowed to foreign leaders, and sympathized with our enemies. He has taken us further into debt than we have ever been or can ever hope to get out of. All the while he has blamed everyone else for his failures and taken credit for things he had very little, if anything, to do with. In short he has shown no real leadership at a time when we needed it the most.

Part 3 Being a consummate cynic when it comes to this world system none of this bothers me in the long run. It should be causing honest people some serious concerns as to how we got to this point. It’s really fairly easy to begin tracing it if you’re willing to face the facts. Here are some of them without much elaboration 1. Most Americans are ignorant of our history as a nation and certainly have no understanding of what our government is supposed to be according to the Constitution. 2. This has come about because our education system no longer teaches real history. It is nearly all based on a politically correct agenda. 3. The mainstream media has gone from being a watchdog to pushing an agenda. For instance, if you disagree with president Obama you are a racist. If you don’t want our nation overrun by illegal aliens you are racist and hate the poor. If you believe that homosexuality is wrong you are full of hate and have a fear of homosexuals. If you are concerned about the influence of Muslims and their leaders’ open hatred of America you are full of hate and Islamophobic. 4. Our government has gone from being accountable to the people to making the people dependent on the government. This is practical socialism. 5. Our government has slowly evolved to the point that most of what occurs is brought about by unelected bureaucrats and appointed czars. 6. The difference between the two political parties is mostly an illusion. We continue to go further in the hole, lose more individual rights and have more government control over us no matter who is in office. We keep getting distracted into thinking that it will matter who is in office based on party propaganda. 7. By and large the American people don’t want to be bothered with facts. They would much rather listen to lies and be entertained than to face reality. They will give up rights for “bread and circuses.” “Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.” – Benjamin Franklin

I have a silly idea. Why don't we have all the people who voted for Romney, pay for the deficit that was present when Obama took office. Those who voted for obama can pay for the present deficit and any other deficit he adds. Fair enough? I thought it was.

I asked my children if they wanted more candy or more vegetables. More candy was the answer so I gave them what they wanted. I asked my children if they wanted to help clean the kitchen after supper or go watch television. Go watch television was the answer. I asked my children if they wanted to do their homework or play a video game. Play a video game they said. Now, doggone it when are those kids going to go get a job and leave our house, because at 23 and 27 they should be getting on with their lives, right? The nation was asked whether they wanted a santa claus or a tom osborne and the majority obviously chose santa claus. So, now, who is going to make and pay for all those toys?

@Mike...I don't believe I mentioned the word vacation in my post...only golf. As quoted from CBS news om June this year, “Obama’s golfing takes about five hours, including the motorcades back and forth from the fairways. If one thinks of this as taking up much of the day – include getting ready to go and cooling off afterward – its fair to say that Obama has spent more than three months of his presidency golfing.” And from the same CBS report "Others noted that then President George W. Bush played only 24 rounds of golf during his eight years in the White House and famously forswore golf in 2003 “in solidarity” with the men and women fighting in foreign wars." Golf time...not vacation time.

It hurts to think that the United States is becomeing an entitlement nation. It also means the beginning of the demise of this great country. Past world history shows that most great nations start to decline at just about this time in their history. We, as a nation, probably have a few more years before we become another total, third world, dependant, dusty nation. Not to mention the fact that we soon we will not be able to defend ourselves from shore to shore aggression.

I love how these conservatives, like bigsky, just love to whine and cry when things don't go their way and talk about how "ignorant" the American voting public is because they didn't vote what they wanted. The election is over - President Obama won - get over yourselves - you got Fischer in the Senate so you got something that you wanted there - it is our system. It works better than most any other system in the world. Grow up and accept the result and quit hating President Obama and the majority of your fellow Americans who voted for him. It's time to work together to solve the real issues of the day and help our nation continue to grow out of the current economic situation. WORK TOGETHER -not bitch and gripe and make up false nonsense and believe any and all conspiracy theories you read on the internet or on this thread. Life is going to go on and we are going to be just fine as a nation if we can put our partisanship aside and find ways to work together to solve the real issues of the day!

I thought the mud slinging was over but it still continues. People, I work and do my job the best I can and do not expect someone else to do it for me. It is a struggle to pay the bills but we get along. Come on people, put down the cell phones, get off the computers, don't look for a hand out. flat rock? exactly why are we ALL screwed. You should have a little more faith in the american public. More doomsday talk? (sigh) In my opinion it will be 10 years or more before history tells us what kind of president Obama was. I agree with some of your points trapper.. BUT the obstruction and record filibusters by the GOP hardly showed a sense or atmosphere of cooperation. The GOP will either work with the president or in 2 years I predict the Dems will take over BOTH houses of the government. At least Mitt had enough class to take it like a man and I was very impressed by his concession speech. I have more respect for him after that speech then I ever did while he was on the campaign trail. Again its OVER!!!! FINALLY!! Like it or not the people have spoken and its time to put aside our differences. MOVE FORWARD!!

It would be great if each side respected the other. Look at what occurred during the Obama years. He passed Obamacare with no vote from the other side. He does not talk to the other side about jobs. The House has passed many bills which the Senate puts in file 13. They do not even try to change them. The Democrats have not passed a budget (required by law) in several years. They do not even try to change those proposed by the other side - they simply ignore the other side.

Lets move forward and work together!! There was never a doubt in my mind he was gonna win a 2nd term. Not because he is the know all end all. But because Romney and the GOP has lost its way. It is what it is. Lest put all our differences aside and work together. You know like adults? Weird idea I know. Lets try respecting each other instead of bad mouthing each other. We all should be able to express our positions without being attacked and that goes for both sides. Glad its finally over!!!

"Lets support him and see what happens." and "There's nothing we can do." Are the same thoughts and phrases uttered as Hitler roamed Europe killing millions. You know, it isn't disagreement that is going to kill America. It is APATHY. I refuse to blindly follow! How many times have you heard: If everyone else jumps off a cliff are you going to follow? Well? Are you?! I love the USA. I love our freedoms and our rights as citizens. But I hate that so many of our citizens have turned their back on God and Country in favor Obama and his own personal agenda. It isn't sour grapes, it is true fear for where we are headed under his leadership.

I don't think it would of made a lot of difference either way. Manufacturing will not come back. Americans are addicted to cheap prices and the only way to provide that is with cheap labor. With an administration that is in bed with the unions, we will never have cheap labor.

Sorry Getting It Done - Obama doesn't work with anyone - he rules via executive orders.

Well, it's over. I hope that everyone quits bashing Obama and starts to work with him. Maybe if he gets some support from the rest of the $&IU*$^ in Washington he can improve this country. Quit bitching and work together.

Tax the wealthy business owners into either a. moving companies off shore or b. closing their doors. You can be the Union workers for the UP voted Obama without thinking about Obama's killing the coal industry. Be careful people for what you wish for, because you got it, and not a one word of gripping from you! And health care...oh my, pray you have stellar health, and if not, pray you can find a doctor!

I think no matter which of these men had been elected, the politicans would still be doing what is best for them.

How stupid can people be to vote him back in? Unbelievable. It's going to be bad news.

I fear railroad layoffs as Obama wants to kill the coal industry -he has already begin this process. That surely won't help our town.
