The North Platte city council race in Ward 1 was exceedingly close, with just 21 votes separating leader Brook Baker from Josh Welden, when the votes were counted. Although the ballots have been counted, the totals are unofficial until they are certified at the end of the week, after a board of canvassers reviews the tally. Unofficially, 66 percent of eligible voters in Lincoln County cast ballots, according to the county clerk's office. Baker received 921 votes. Welden had 900. In ward 2, Glenn Petersen defeated Barb Keller, 1,741-1,298. In ward 3, the later returns blew open a tight race, with challenger Andrew Lee winning by an unofficial 294 votes over incumbent Dan McGuire, 1,196-902. In ward 4, incumbent Larry Campbell took a commanding win over challenger Tracy Martinez. Unofficially, Campbell had twice as many votes and won, 1,056-528.
School board For the North Platte school board, Jack Price won by nearly 350 votes over incumbent Jim Paloucek, 2,078-1,744, in ward 3 -- the southwest part of town. Mike Morell claimed a 57-43% win over Pat Bartels for the ward 2 seat on the school board. Kathy Phares was unopposed in ward 1.
Statewide In the race for the U.S. Senate, Republican Deb Fischer will take her Nebraska values to Washington. She defeated opponent Bob Kerrey by 58-41% with 96 percent of the ballots counted. Fischer nearly doubled Kerrey's total in Lincoln County -- 10,122-5,170. For President, Romney held a 59-38% lead over President Barack Obama in Nebraska, with other candidates receiving about 2 percent. The state Constitutional amendments that would give state senators a raise and extend their terms another four years were defeated by a wide margin. On the other hand, voters gave a resounding yes to amendments to protect hunting and fishing, and to allow elected officials to be impeached for prior crimes.
