People gathered at the Platte River Mall to see creative ways artists used everyday junk to create works of art.

More than 60 pieces were entered in the show, from furniture to jewelry, paintings and sculpture. Artists from Colorado and California had displays in the show.

The show challenges artists to use new mediums while also giving the public ideas and inspiration for ways to use everyday items that would otherwise end up in the landfill, KNPLCB spokeswoman Holly Carlini said.

Carlini was a winner too. She created a guitar using a leather purse, s vinyl record, a Johnny Cash cassette tape, a paint stir stick, a piece of door trim, a door hinge and handles.

Another prize winner, Cheri Thalkan, made a tree from an old coat rack, creating copper colored leaves from salvaged wall decorations.

Another item was called Welcome Back Klutter. Created by Laurie Jean of California, bouquets, which she calls Fauxquets, were made from many things, including popped soccer balls, bread tabs, mentos and mint containers, water bottles and drink lids, paint swatches and magazines.
