There are critics aplenty of Mayor Marc Kaschke, but Kaschke has demonstrated pluck and ability in bringing changes to the Iron Eagle golf course. He has fostered a leaner but adequate city budget. The city has prospered under his watch, and most of all, he's been in the ring for four years and knows the ropes.

Challenger Dwight Livingston has considerable credentials, but has been less than dynamic in public appearances, leaving the public guessing what a Livingston administration would do.

On the North Platte school board, Jim Paloucek has done a good job of dealing with the storms of questionable administrative decisions and a difficult economy while aiming for academic progress.

Like Kaschke, Paloucek has become a target of complainers, but Paloucek knows the school district like few others who are in a decision-making capacity. He can be highly effective.

Challenger Jack Price, a former central office administrator, is likeable and knowledgeable, but has been out of the system for several years. He could be overly tempted to administrate from the board, a recipe for conflict, and his desire to keep top salaries in line would be questionable.

For city council, Dan McGuire is no spring chicken, but he also knows how decisions come down the pike at City Hall and how to impact them for the better. Challenger Andrew Lee has shown plenty of pluck, but he has no experience. Lee has hardly held a job and he could be overwhelmed by the responsibilities, the personalities and the size of the city budget that he would help oversee.

Since you asked, and only my opinion based mostly on seeing the whole group in the 3 forums: Baker seems to have shown he takes it seriously, he had much more of substance to offer in the last forum. Weldon still smiles, makes awkward jokes, and doesn't have much to say. Peterson seems sincerely invested in the job and knows what is needed. Keller did not strike me as very assertive and did not have much to say. Lee is a wild card for me. Good energy, and new blood IS necessary on the council. McGuire has my respect for his long service, but I think it's appropriate for younger residents to start learning the ropes. Martinez researches issues and some good ideas but might have trouble gaining support. Campbell, I agree with you, strikes me as solid and thoughtful. Mayoral race, I was on the fence. So many people like Livingston as a person but I wish he had spoken out more on issues. Kaschke presents well but more transparency might have brought him less criticism.

I'd give Baker a slight edge against Welden and I think Campbell is becoming a solid councilman. What do you think?

I have recommendations on two Constitutional amendments (published in the print paper). I will post here this afternoon.

George, any recommendations on the other contested Council seats?

Sorry George. I don't agree with you on these. Kaschke mostly did nothing until the last couple months, when I think that he realized being mayor wasn't so bad. Paloucek continues to watch as the school system collapses, and can't see that there are ample places to improve the district while reducing costs. Neither of these individuals should be rated as 'effective' when it comes to their meager accomplishments. Both institutions need a lot of measurable change all the time, not little bumps of correction at election time.
