The Twin Platte Natural Resources District Board of Directors will have a meeting Nov. 8 at 3 p.m. on the second floor of Great Western Bank. Without any public input, the TPNRD, with three other NRDs, decided to buy almost 20,000 acres of private land for $83 million. The TPNRD’s share is a little over $20 million. Rather than require meters to restrict water use, they chose to make a once-in-a-lifetime purchase. I wonder if this is not successful, will they go after another once-in-a-lifetime purchase? There are more future expenses planned after this purchase. One estimate is $7 million for a pipeline and then another project (as yet unnamed) is expected to cost $10 million plus. An irrigated farmer has high fuel costs, fertilizer, existing taxes and other costs involved in getting crop out of the field. Adding the present guess of $4-6 an acre (in taxes to pay off the new TPNRD land) doesn’t improve profits. This tax will last at least 20 years, or more likely 30 years. There are no real plans in effect as to who will run or manage this property and at what additional cost. You can be assured, as the taxpayer you will be picking up the tab. That includes the farmer and every resident of every county involved. The trickledown effect from this rushed and “we will worry about the details after we make the” purchase has all the earmarks of Obamacare.
