Without any public input, the TPNRD, with three other NRDs, decided to buy almost 20,000 acres of private land for $83 million.

The TPNRD’s share is a little over $20 million. Rather than require meters to restrict water use, they chose to make a once-in-a-lifetime purchase. I wonder if this is not successful, will they go after another once-in-a-lifetime purchase?

There are more future expenses planned after this purchase. One estimate is $7 million for a pipeline and then another project (as yet unnamed) is expected to cost $10 million plus. An irrigated farmer has high fuel costs, fertilizer, existing taxes and other costs involved in getting crop out of the field. Adding the present guess of $4-6 an acre (in taxes to pay off the new TPNRD land) doesn’t improve profits. This tax will last at least 20 years, or more likely 30 years.

There are no real plans in effect as to who will run or manage this property and at what additional cost. You can be assured, as the taxpayer you will be picking up the tab. That includes the farmer and every resident of every county involved. The trickledown effect from this rushed and “we will worry about the details after we make the” purchase has all the earmarks of Obamacare.

These are the Board of Directors of Twin Platte Natural Resources District and their phone numbers, as required when filing for the office: Dennis Schiltz 284-4314, Jerry Weaver 539-4456, Eric Hansen 534-1312, James Meismer 284-6509, Robert L. Petersen 532-2689, Robert Wiseman 368-5866, Doug Stack 532-7719, Robert E. Petersen 530-7987, Joe Walgren 537-3136, Shane Storer 764-2343, and John Williams 539-1374.

Please give them a call and ask them the questions you may have.

This is yet another fine example of runaway government spending. Spend first, then figure out how to gouge the taxpayers next. If the NRD's wnated to preserve water, then force mandatory limits on pumping as stated above. The land the NRD bought is near worthless property, beat to death by a huge corporate farming conglomerate who tilled up land that should have never been broken. Blowing sand and mass erosion, along with employing dozens of illegal aliens and hiding them inside the boundries of the property. The land will take tens of millions of dollars just to put back to its native state, along with a decade or so of maint. to make sure it is. The NRD doesn't care about that parcel, they just want the money and have taxpayer and farmer fees (tax monies) buring a hole in their pocket. This is just another example of a governmental agency spending money they don't have to justify more government jobs. This purchase accomplish's two things : Makes the investors int he land very wealthy (37% ROI in just a matter of a couple of years), And puts an even larger tax burden on the landowners of the counties involved. Absolutely PATHETIC behavior of these elected officials. On one further note, if the NRD plans on using the legal advice of one of its officials ( Mr. Stack), this sale and the NRD could easily be involved in a massive class action suit not only against the NRD, but its elected officials.
