Around 1,300 kids got Halloween treats downtown Saturday, receiving candy and prizes simply for showing up on the bricks.

There were Fun Jumpz, a cupcake walk, a penny and a bean bag toss, trunk or treats and Creepy Caves (grab bags).

Officer Rodney Brown of the North Platte Police Department showed kids the inside of his squad car. Firefighters brought two units and handed out tokens.

A volunteer at Brown Shoe Fit said she gave away more than 1,000 pieces of candy. Not to be outdone, the county Democrats said it seemed more like 2,000.

Costumes were plentiful.

"It's a chance to give back," said Malinda Halsted, the co-manager of the Girl Scout Service Unit. "I like to see all the costumes, but more than that it's a chance to give."

The wind chill was around 40 degrees, which might have reduced attendance a little but it didn't dampen the enthusiasm, said organizer Bob Mayber of Farmer's State Bank.
