Shawn Cryts of Cozad was sentenced Thursday to 16 months in prison for failing to register as a sex offender. The sentence also orders Cryts to serve five years of supervised release when he gets out. U.S. District Judge Richard G. Kopf handed down the sentence. Cryts, 30, was convicted of aggravated sexual battery in 2003 in Tennessee. He was required to register as a sex offender where ever he lived. He was arrested in November after the Kearney Police Department received information that Cryts was living and working there, but neither Tennessee nor Nebraska authorities had record of Cryts registering his change of residence or employment. The United States Marshals Service, the Kearney Police Department and the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case. Cryts sentence was announced by United States Attorney Deborah R. Gilg.
