The Lady Panthers, who head into subdistricts with a 16-9 record, lost to undefeated Kearney Catholic 25-7, 25-6 before rebounding with a 25-12, 25-23 victory over Broken Bow.

Hershey was no match for Kearney Catholic in the first match and for good reason. The Stars are ranked No. 4 in the Omaha World-Herald’s all-class state rankings and are the favorites to win its third straight championship in Class C1.

Panther coach Amy Beyer knew it was going to be a tough match for her team.

“Kearney Catholic is the real deal,” Beyer said.

After getting pounded by Kearney Catholic, Hershey finished the day on a good note by beating Broken Bow (11-18).

“We played pretty well in the first set and then we had a huge let-up, mentally, in the second,” said Beyer. “We just cannot allow ourselves to lose focus like that. We are lucky that it just went two.”

The Lady Panthers will head into the C2-11 subdistrict. In the C2-11, Hershey is the No. 2 seed and will play third-seed Dundy County-Stratton (18-10) in Ogallala on Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m.

If the Panthers get past the Tigers, it is looking at a probable matchup with No. 1-seed North Platte St. Pat’s for the championship. The 26-1 Lady Irish have won both matchups with the Lady Panthers but Hershey cannot be counted out with the rivalry between the two schools.
