The fire erupted near the north end of the sandy Rolling Hills Road, about six miles north of the Morth Platte Regional airport, and burned about 120 acres.

North Platte Fire Chief Paul Pederson said the land was relatively heavy grass because it is in the federal conservation reserve, where grazing is restricted.

The fire was reported after midnight at 1:17 a.m. It burned grass, cedar trees and about two-dozen hay bales but no buildings, Pederson said. Maxwell Volunteer Firefighters came to help. North Platte fire crews remained there until 9:30 a.m. Sunday, watching over smoldering hay and trees.

The hay was not insured, according to the NPFD report.

The cause is undetermined, Pederson said. The fire burned to the edge of the Rolling Hills Road.

I know that place, there's good star gazing out there because some of the big hills block light pollution from town.
