Firefighters defy wind, pounce on fire south of SutherlandTell North Platte what you think

Despite strong winds that gusted to 60 miles an hour, firefighters put out a fire Thursday near the Sutherland Reservoir in less than two hours.

The fire was reported at 2 p.m. four miles southwest of the Sutherland Reservoir. It burned a long but relatively narrow path and consumed about 500 acres, Lincoln County Emergency Manager Dan Guenther said.

Guenther said residents pitched in to help supply water, which was a big help.

Fanned by northwest winds, the fire started near W. Correction Road and ran to Black Cherry Creek, and southeast to Park Road, Guenthner said.

Units from Hershey, Sutherland, Paxton, North Platte and Wallace responded.

High wind warnings remain in effect until 10 p.m. central time, the National Weather Service said. Gusts may hit 70 mph in open areas, the weather service said.
