As Deb Fischer and Bob Kerrey trade attack ads in the final weeks of the campaign, Kerrey took time last week to announce a plan to cut federal spending.

Kerrey called for $1.13 trillion in cuts, many of them over and above the amount of automatic cuts that would take effect in January if Congress does not come up with a definite plan.

Kerrey said Congress and White House should lead in cutting costs by freezing wages and reducing staff.

Bob Kerrey will be at the North Platte Regional Airport at 2 p.m. Monday, part of a campaign trip around the state. He is scheduled to stay for 45 minutes.

In keeping with the evermore common approach to spreading cuts out over 10 years, Kerrey’s cuts would also take place during the next decade.

Kerrey would cut the budgets of Congress and the White House by 15%, cut the federal workforce by 15% and reduce the number of federal contractors by 15%. Doing that would save nearly $240 billion in a decade, he said.

Kerrey would freeze Congressional wages for three years, reduce federal travel and printing by 20 percent and sell unused federal property within three years.

The rest of the cuts would come from implementing the Simpson-Bowles committee’s recommendations, which curb federal spending by $345 billion more than the so-called “sequestration” by a Congressional super-committee, which is a mix of cuts to social programs and military spending.

Also, Kerrey called for:

• Reforms to federal IT management and closure of federal computer data centers, saving $200 billion.

• Elimination of government offices that primarily function to consult with television and film productions. That would save $34.4 million, he said.

Kerrey said Fischer is sticking to her talking points and skating through the campaign without proposing any solutions.

Kerrey has also spelled out cuts and reforms he favors, and helped develop, to save Social Security and Medicare.

“I have a record of bi-partisan support,” he said. “I’ve balanced the budget before and I know how to get the job done.”

“The only way we are going to fix Washington is through bi-partisan cooperation and that is why I have endorsed Republican proposals and today, have offered more spending cuts of my own,” Kerrey said.

This opinion will be popular like always. Think that entitlement mostly applies to the medicaid crowd. That bunch of folks who live off your tax dollars and really don't want or try to work. At anything. And we owe it to them to provide them with food, lodging, cell phones, health care (as many trips to the doctor or ER as they want), disability payments, even though we see that they can walk, etc. So let's hear it, Talk Back, from those of you on the entitlement band wagon. I'm sure to get bashed. And while you're at it, explain how folks with no job and no income who live on medicaid have cell phones, computers, flat screen tv's with dish or cable. But have not enough income to afford anything that might contribute to their lifestyle. I never can figure it out. Because pretty sure if I were in those same shoes, I would not have any of those items. Would not be able to afford it. That folks is the 47% that we pay for. The ones who say, your money should pay for my lifestyle. Bring on the comments.

Regarding 'entitlements,' the term has been used loosely for several years to describe set federal spending committments for Social Security and Medicare, as opposed to "discretionary" spending, which Congress could adjust each year. And, Kerrey announced his stand and plans to reform SS and Medicare weeks ago, which we reported.

Best of fortune in your endeavor Bob Kerrey, but I doubt our present governing style can be fixed with money - neither more nor less. But maybe YOU are the difference the US Senate needs.  _____________ "Entitlement" spending - I don't recall Senator Kerrey using the term but I hear it a lot this election cycle. I'm sure you've head it too. I think the term is meant to carry negative connotations because I hear it uttered with derogatory tones, usually from people with scowls on their face - but always without a clear definition - what is it? What are the 'entitlements' and the 'entitlement' spending that has some-people's chones all tied up in a knot?

There are three ways to cut the deficit. Either cut "entitlement" spending, raise taxes, or increase growth. No one talks about growth. Only growth will increase jobs. Raise taxes on job creators, and growth will not occur. The rate of entitlement spending growth is unsustainable. Increasing taxes will not fill the spending gap. Kerry is cutting penny's with his proposals. He is dodging the real problem "entitlement" spending. Our Country is in serious trouble with the course we are on.

we need to quit funding countries that hate our guts. We are sending billions over seas to help with other countries problems when we could be using that money to pay off our debt and deficit. We simply can't keep borrowing money to give to other countries and to pay for peoples wants. I am all for helping others especially our own poor but face it. If you own big screen TVs cars buy junk food instead of making your own food you aren't poor and don't deserve the help.

Course DF will refuse to raise revenue and will probably vote to cut taxes by 20% like Mitt. That will sure help with our deficit...

Ok, so in ten years he is going to cut 240 billion. Well here is the bad news, under current spending we will run up over nine trillion dollars in debt which means he will cut approximately three percent, three percent from the budget deficit. So instead of a twenty five trillion dollar debt by 2023 we will have only a twenty four trillion seven hundred billion dollar debt. Gee that sounds like real progress. First of all Congress and the president spend little money on themselves, a few billion a year in a three and half trillion dollar budget. Cutting the federal workforce will have a broader impact but as you can see not that much. We can't cut billions we must cut trillions. I guess Kerrey forgot how to count while he was in New York over the last decade.
