The Sutherland Sailors handed North Platte St. Patrick’s its first defeat of the season Saturday, claiming a hard-fought, five-set win in the SPVA tournament championship match. Sutherland (17-5) won the first set but the Irish came back to take the next two. In the crucial fourth set, the Sailors outlasted St. Pat's in an overtime battle, 30-28, and then won the deciding fifth set, 15-12, to take the title. The scores were 25-18, 15-25, 21-25, 30-28 and 15-12. For Sutherland, Sam Kennedy had 20 kills, 2 blocks, 23 digs and 2 aces. Joli Hopping had 20 digs and 52 assists. Jalyne Schuster had 17 kills, one block and 16 digs. Alison Van Skiver had 13 digs, and Kristen Nelson had 22 digs and 2 kills.
Chase County challenge Earlier, North Platte St. Patrick's (21-1) defeated Chase County in four sets. Chase County (14-12) drew first blood in the match, winning the first set, 23-25. The Irish came back to win the next three, 25-20, 25-13 and 26-24.
