Kansas man arrested after fatal crashTell North Platte what you think

LEXINGTON - One person died at midnight Monday in a fiery crash and a Kansas man is charged with vehicular homicide.

A state trooper briefly gave chase to a pickup before the fatal wreck, Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins said.

Just before midnight, a State Trooper tried to stop of a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup for reckless driving and failing to stop at a sign sign at Sixth and Grant in Lexington, Collins said.

Instead of stopping, the driver continued south on U.S. Highway 283 and over the overpass. A few blocks further, he ran a red light at U.S. 283 and Cattlemen Drive and collided with a westbound pickup.

The westbound pickup burst into flames on impact and the driver was killed, Collins said.

The name of the deceased has not been released, pending identification and notification of family.

The driver of the Dodge Ram pickup, Destry S. Swartz, 22, of Coats, Kan. and a 17-year-old teenage male passenger from Lexington were not injured, but Swartz was arrested and jailed on charges that include:

• Second offense driving under the influence,

• Felony motor vehicle homicide,

• Felony operation of a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, and

• Willful reckless driving, Collins said.

The Lexington Police Department and the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the South Central Allied Law Enforcement System (SCALES), are investigating the crash.
