An underground gas leak Thursday afternoon brought fire crews to the corner of Fourth and Walnut. A six-inch gas main was broken and gas seeped into some sewers, Capt. Trent Kleinow of the North Platte Fire Department said. Fire crews were called to stand by at nearby intersections as a precaution. The gas was shut off, diffused and repairs made to the pipe. Some gas was detected in sewer pipes, which could have drifted into buildings and presented the danger of explosions, but the gas was cleared, he said. Kleinow said another work crew apparently broke the line by accident, but he did not specify the crew. He said repairs were expected to be complete by 11 p.m.
