The staff of the convention and visitor’s bureau is in the process of moving. And, on Tuesday, the North Platte City Council approved dividing the lot into two parcels.

The lot is also home to the Howard Johnson’s motel, which may or may not move. Developer Mark Wilkinson said everything is in preliminary stages. Even though a drive up bank could be built right on the corner, according to council documents, Wilkinson said that deal is not sealed, as he and the bank explore some of their options.

The CVB will move out by Oct. 15, moving most of their things Oct. 11-12, Executive Director Lisa Burke told the Bulletin Tuesday. The new location will be in a building south of I-80 which also is home to Red Roof Antiques in a former K-Mart building. The building was also occupied by the U.S. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.

Wilkinson agreed to pay all costs of the CVB move and the rent will remain the same, he said.

Another business at Dewey and Francis, Attitudes Hair Salon, is moving now to the Westfield shopping plaza.

The subdivided lot also opens up the possibility of a mini-plaza, but plans are still preliminary to any construction, Wilkinson told the Bulletin.

Downtown

In other development news, some of the offices at the Great Plains Regional Medical Center will move downtown to East Fifth, into a Wilkinson building that was most recently the home of the U.S. Census Bureau.

Offices inside that building are being reshaped to suit the new tenants. The lease officially begins on Nov. 1 and will last four years, with an option to renew, Wilkinson said.

The hospital offices are moving to get out of the path of construction during a $100 million expansion that began in August.

We must really have a lot of people with a lot of money in Flatrock to support so many financial institutions. Hey, I just had a great idea! Why not change the name "Flatrock" to "Bankrock".....?? We will be known as the town with all the banks, for sure.

Frannie, YOU talked to the OWNER of Culver's and they told you that??? Really?? Or you talked to a manager at Culver's in, say, Kearney? Trust me, if you would put up the money that it takes to establish a Culver's franchise, they would very likely open a restaurant in NP. It takes investment, not talk, to get things done.

@fanny...just what makes you think we DESERVE retail and food joints? That is absolutely absurd. I agree with Yoda and npbred. Remember...you build it and they will come...IF THERE IS PROFIT IN IT.

franny, those places will only come if they know the can make a profit and North platte is just not big enough for a lot of major companies especially with this economy now, but we could do more to help the small business owner out and I am with you Mtnman that is way to much rent for NP ,and is part of the reason why things don't improve a lot of greed but hey everyone is out to make money.

There's a solution of course to all this...all it takes is for someone to pony up the cash to build all these wonderful shopping opportunities that we don't have...and take the associated risks with doing so. But, I think those that complain the most, are those that expect others to build it for their convenience, and also accept the risk for providing it to others. Me...well, I'm going to sink my money into something with less risk, that still generates a decent return. I'm equally sure that the developer at the heart of this story would be happy to develope some place for these wonderful opportunities we don't have...but again, someone is going to have to pony up the cash to get that done. If a bank wants to spend the money, and no one else does, well, only a fool would refuse the opportunity...
