Neighbors helped nab a suspected thief Saturday morning, after several people were seen carting off pickup loads of items from a home and yard in the 700 block of N. Bryan.

When police responded to a call around 9 a.m., the vehicle was gone, but they searched for and found the pickup driver, who said he was cleaning up the property because the owner asked him to.

However, the owner, Karl Kirkland, told police he didn’t give anyone permission to be on his property.

Stanley Churchwell, 26, was arrested for burglary and theft by taking — both felonies.

Apparently, Churchwell solicited help of several people who thought he was legitimately cleaning up the property, Police Lt. Steve Reeves said.

Reeves said several pickup loads of stolen merchandise were recovered. Items are still being inventoried and the exact amount of the loss and recovery has not been determined yet.

In court Monday, Lincoln County Judge Michael Piccolo assigned Pat Hays as public defender. Deputy Lincoln County Austin Leighty asked for a $50,000 bond, which was granted.

According to jail records, Churchwell has been arrested in the past on drug charges, forged checks and driving offenses.

The owner of the property is known to overload properties with junk from auctions. then he just leaves it sit. I hate a thief but a person who deppreciates the value of a neighborhood the way the owner does needs a wakeup call.
