Fischer's 'fair market system' won't work for healthcareTell North Platte what you think

Deb Fischer has a political ad stating she supports elimination of “Obamacare” and replace it with a “fair market system.” This fair market system is basically a system where the insurance companies are in the drivers-seat dictating your coverage while denying or capping some services.

In this system outcome is not fair as long as everyone lacks the same opportunities with access to needed care.

Disease, severe sickness and disability are not compatible with a commitment from a fair market system that distributes resources inefficiently. Obamacare rightfully closes the gap of opportunity that provides adequate care allowing for personal confidence and reduces the fear of economic hardship.

There are objections of universal coverage on the grounds of cost, intrusion into freedom of choice and a demand for more individual responsibility, among other reasons. However, many of those raising these objections in fact already support another system that has many parallels to universal health insurance coverage: universal education.

It is the right of all Americans to obtain a basic education. One cannot simply “opt out” of being educated, because we consider it, as a matter of utility, too important to have an educated populace. Clearly a well educated society confers advantages in job competitiveness and earning potential.

It is now time to realize our social and moral obligation at making access to healthcare a Right as most western civilizations have done. It does not take much of an education to see that leaving 45-50 million Americans without adequate health insurance makes no sense.

Deb Fischer has it all wrong when she thinks a “fair market system” will resolve the hardship of the severely ill. Obviously her message is representing the insurance companies and not the voice of Nebraskans.

I agree with John also. Obamacare is here and it will be 6 to 10 years before we can really say if it was a bad thing or not. I support the change. I am pretty sure even after last nights debate that Obama will be getting a 2nd term So Obamacare is here to stay. I think support for it will increase as people start to see the benefits and the new mandates are implemented. So ready for this election to be over!!

What odd arguments. I pay my health insurance premiums, the companies pay for my medical procedures and they are greedy? Gees folks you really need to understand some basic economics. As to the hypotheticals - if there was no medicare or medicaid - many people on medicare do have private insurance and that number is going to have to grow. The interesting part of these arguments is ignoring another problem - sky high malpractice insurance - many doctors pay tens of thousands of dollars annually for malpractice - some over hundred thousand dollars - which means they start in the red. Why? Because GGGRRREEEDDDDYYYY (scare huh?) trial lawyers sue for every hangnail infection and popped pimple they can. Want to cut health costs, limit malpractice awards. Remember the lawyers are GGGRRRREEEDDDYYY.

Well said John. I used to blame the greed of the healtcare industry until I had the epiphany that the insurance industry is the one to blame. If you eliminate government subsidized healthcare (Medicare and Medicaid), over 60% of the population is without healthcare coverage. John Lennon had a song called "Imagine", imagine a world without the greedy insurance companies. I would suddenly be able to afford a doctors visit and even a paint job for my car.

My vote really? The last three elections I voted for a balanced budget, lower taxes, less regulation and got nothing, doesn't exactly make me confident government will run health care efficiently. On the other hand in the free market there is choice, different companies and methods of changing, the place where I actually have power because only my vote counts.

The single decision maker is you. You run the government because you vote, so if you don't like what your government is doing then just change it. A lot of people don't seem to understand that the majority of the healthcare law is meant to put the power back into the peoples hands and not the CEO's hands. Its putting people before profit. Profit is a good thing, just not when it comes at the expense of someones well being. Insurance companies profits have been rising steadily but the amount of money they put out towards healthcare for their customers has been going down. The healthcare law makes sure you get a bigger bang for your buck with your insurance companies.

Oil companies make profits, grocery stores make profits, clothing stores make profits, most businesses make profits so Mike you denunciation of health care companies as making profits seems a little shortsighted. Obamacare sets up a single decisionmaker - that is a problem - for under our economic and political system we never have a single decisionmaker. There is a certain naivete to the argument that government can do no harm - government can do a lot of harm and that is why we keep a lot of decision making out of their hands. I don't want government deciding my healthcare, period.

No, there will be rationing in Paul Ryan's voucher program. Under Ryan's plan seniors would be allowed up to a certain amount of healthcare, then they're on your own after that. And do you think the deregulated insurance companies will cover someone who has already used up their government voucher? No way! They'll deny you coverage because of pre-existing conditions.

There are death panels in Obamacare. There will be longer waits and rationing.

Anyone that ever believed in Sarah Palin's "death panels" should be especially scared of Fischer's free market system. Insurance companies are very profitable, but lets say you have someone who has recurring cancer and they rack up hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not a million dollars or more, of medical bills. Insurance companies will say sorry! You cost too much to keep alive for us and are bringing our annual earnings down. So you're on your own now. That, my friends, is a death panel.

First off, before Obamacare, there were already many ways for the uninsured to obtain care (for little to no cost). Second, many opt out of an education. How? The way our education system works, nearly everyone passes, regardless of accomplishment. Schools continue to pass students for the additional government money. Where is the outrage from the parents since their children are not getting an education? (Once the parents care, things will change.) Third, the quality of healthcare will decrease with Obamacare. Fourth, do you really think someone who supports infanticide really cares about your health? Finally, Obamacare comes with an incredible cost, look at how many people are not working and are no longer included in the workforce. I don't know what the answer for healthcare is, but Obamacare is not the answer.
